do u need to work the 3 schedules if you put in your two weeks?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by plastixhearts
attempted to put in my two weeks (last day exactly two weeks from today). Was told I am required to work the week of the 2 since the schedule is already made. which would be… longer than three weeks.
i would but I already have a job lined up for a few days after my two weeks notice, so that’s not really an option. Am I required to give a three week notice?
also i am literally leaving because I graduated college??? from ASU??? and my DM said I had to stay with starbucks? why would i get a science degree to stay with starbucks? am i in the wrong?
Edit to add, I just got the job offer Friday, contemplated, and put in my two weeks today. I didn’t know I was getting the new job until Friday, and I made sure I would have two weeks notice before starting the new one. i don’t want to screw over the team at all which is why i gave them the notice but I wasn’t sure if it was policy to work for three weeks given how our schedules are posted
vroommmmmmm220 points6m ago
Nope. you don’t have to work out all the schedules. When i put in my notice my manager had to rewrite the one schedule.
plastixhearts [OP]59 points6m ago
okay thank you so much! I just wanted to make sure I would be in good standing if I ever for whatever reason wanted to return. probably won’t but rather be safe than sorry!
I_like_to_know32 points6m ago
Technically the 3rd week doesn't get posted until Monday so I'm not sure why they're giving you a hard time.
vroommmmmmm28 points6m ago
i totally get you. i’d rather jump off a bridge than go back but you never know, don’t close doors unless you have to.
themagician3091 points6m ago
Well at the end of the day I'd imagine it's probably up to your GM if you left in good standing. I got fired from the Starbucks I worked at so IDK if I'll ever be able to get hired again.
looker009152 points6m ago
Not only do you not need to work once your 2 week is up but giving 2 weeks is a courtesy. You're leaving anyway, so what are they going to do, fire you?
plastixhearts [OP]68 points6m ago
I just didn’t want to be marked as non rehirable just in case. I don’t plan on coming back but not trying to burn a bridge unless necessary
lewabwee22 points6m ago
If you’re marked as non-rehireable that only lasts for six months and it’s wiped off your record entirely.
MasterMischievous9 points6m ago
Lol that is not true.
Beg1nAga1n7 points6m ago
Where did you hear this? My SM was looking at rehiring someone who applied and he said she worked there from 2015-2017 but wasn’t rehirable. I was sitting by him doing tips as he was on the phone with whatever department works with that.
lewabwee2 points6m ago
I had a friend who got fired twice and after six months was able to come back each time. That’s what I was told, basically. There could be a more severe option for something more permanent if you really make them mad?
JavaWasp-7 points6m ago
Everyone is eligible for rehire.
MasterMischievous8 points6m ago
Not true.
neighborhoodswamphag1 points6m ago
that is very wrong lol.
Comfortable-Plane94459 points6m ago
You don’t have to do anything. A notice is just a courtesy. If they’re gonna act like that I would just stop showing up. Do you hat you need to do to take care of yourself- sbux does not give a fuck about any of us, I promise you that.
plastixhearts [OP]29 points6m ago
thank you! i just was confused because my manager knew I was applying for new positions in my degree (even said “of course you’re looking what would you do here with a chemistry degree”), and then acted shook when I did that 😭 like don’t get me wrong I don’t hate starbs but i studied a lot and want to get a foot in the door to my career so i can go back to masters/doctors and like, use what I learned idk
th3_thing53 points6m ago
Seeing that you got your answer, I just wanted to add something one of the managers at my new job said during my second interview: I admire your dedication to your company but Starbucks can find another you tomorrow. You probably have great coworkers and probably even a nice boss but you currently work for a company that doesn’t give a crap about you and on this team, we need you.
For clarity I work for a small family owned Solar company as a salesman. Really opened my eyes to the fact that in some places particular skills you have will actually be valued and compensated extremely well
plastixhearts [OP]17 points6m ago
i love this !
th3_thing13 points6m ago
OP I hope you find all the appreciation and pay you deserve on your new job. Hell I hope we all get our chance to leave this dilapidated coffee shop behind
testingaurora31 points6m ago
Well done on finishing asu!! Thats really admirable and congrats on the new job
SnooWoofers745615 points6m ago
when i quit starbucks a few years ago my manager told me i had to submit a “four weeks notice” and then she took me off the schedule anyway.
sweetxfracture14 points6m ago
It’s the store managers job to re-work the schedule based around your notice. You are doing a courtesy to them by even giving notice. You don’t technically have to, and you have no obligation to them at all. :) good luck in your new job
rudebii10 points6m ago
What will they do if you do t work those shifts, Fire you?
plastixhearts [OP]11 points6m ago
i just don’t want to be marked as unrehirable 😭 I always think the worst and im like “what if i flunk out of science and need to come back” 💀
rudebii9 points6m ago
I wouldn’t sweat it TBH. It’s not you can’t go work at a competitor
mondrianna3 points6m ago
Tbh even if you were marked unrehirable, you would be able to easily prove that it’s bullshit because you can just save your last pay stub and your 2 week notice email. You’d have proof you did the right thing, and proof your old SM was a dick.
ETA: I was marked unrehirable and was still rehired.
Murder-of-Crows89 points6m ago
I like your integrity in this matter. No matter what, do the right thing and be proud of your work.
Yes, it’s not the greatest company for many reasons. But I’ve made many friends, work with some good people who are just trying to get thru life, have some super customers and am grateful for my health Insurance among other the bennies. But I’m counting my days too.
Good luck in your new venture and life!
NotSailorVenus7 points6m ago
You don’t have to, my manager asked for me to work the three weeks and I did. But you don’t have to!
xiew7 points6m ago
Depending on how much you care you don’t need to work anymore at all. You could put in your two weeks and then not show up for single day.
jordan_leigh6 points6m ago
You can quit and leave whenever you want. 2 weeks is just a formality to allow them time to adjust labor. You could walk away tomorrow if you felt like.
Kitabparast5 points6m ago
I’ve worked in HR for decades.
1. Giving notice is usually a courtesy if you work in an at-will state.
2. Giving notice is strongly encouraged if you want to leave on good terms.
3. An SM/DM can provide more info, but if your SM/DM can mark you as not eligible for rehire, then you won’t be able to work for SBUX. Although I don’t know if they can do this and what all of the rules are.
4. It is legal to simply tender your resignation and leave.
5. On the flip side, SBUX doesn’t have to honor your two-week notice. They can separate you before it’s over.
6. Don’t be bullied by anyone. Know your rights and stick to them. Remember that many people don’t know the laws and rules of HR. Your DM is just desperate not to have extra/more work done.
So, do what you must.
uwumoment4 points6m ago
no i didn’t show up for any of my shifts i was scheduled for, but i told my manager i wouldn’t be showing up
rosepink4204 points6m ago
they literally cannot require you to work those days. what are they gonna do, fire you? 😂
Dillonitis4 points6m ago
You can quit whenever you want. This is your life.
legallysamantha3 points6m ago
Giving two weeks is a courtesy, not mandatory. Some people don't even give notice, they just stop showing up. They knew you were in school and had just graduated, so it's not a surprise to them that you would be leaving soon.
The partner manual says something about a preference of two weeks, nothing about 3, and nothing stating its mandatory.
It's not your fault they post schedules 3 weeks in advance, and as someone who has created schedules for Starbucks, it's not hard to go back in and change it. I had to do it for an earlier than expected maternity leave. Took me all of 30 mins to rearrange the schedule and schedule in some interviews.
Congrats on your degree and good luck!
Just-Examination77022 points6m ago
I never even let them know I was coming back at all. The way my store treated me was awful, It came to the point where I would cry going into work, cry on my break and cry when I got home. I finally put my mental health first and left after my break one day and never went back.
Hazel_is_Trans2 points6m ago
Your luck that they didn’t fire you because I got fired for putting my 2 weeks on Friday
plastixhearts [OP]2 points6m ago
Omg why did they give a reason
Hazel_is_Trans3 points6m ago
For closing the window on a customer because of a bee (I’m allergic and everyone’s closes the window) but I got fired 2 hours after handing over my 2weeks
plastixhearts [OP]1 points6m ago
that’s hella dumb i am also allergic and I physically run away from the bees but it must be a starbucks thing to not care about ppl with disabilities bc my coworker asked to go home bc he was feeling sick and my sm said no and then he had a seizure and had to go to the hospital thx starbucks
Hazel_is_Trans2 points6m ago
So I’m not the only one I should probably sue but honestly I don’t care at this point Starbucks is probably going to have to pay it’s currently and ex employees a settlement after the union busting and it’s osha violations
ThisGuyTokes4202 points6m ago
You technically don't even have to give 2 weeks. You are your own person with your own life and can tell them you quit at ANY time, and just walk out.
Not saying you SHOULD do this, just that I wouldn't worry about it if you're already extending the courtesy of a 2 week notice. Beyond that is their problem.
ResolveExpert7592 points6m ago
You put it in two weeks. You work TWO weeks, and that’s it. You are the one who is entitled to choosing your last day. If you’re told anything else, ethics and compliance can clarify that for you.
amandalzh2 points6m ago
whatever you put your last day as is your last day.
jennyparks071 points6m ago
Ex SM here, You don’t even need to do a two week notice, it’s a general courtesy. Your loyalty is to your new job. Your manager needs to figure it out. What are they going to do? Fire you? Your last day is the day you put on your resignation notice or told them. It’s manipulative for them to expect you to work beyond your two weeks. Also, they cannot take back your degree so your DM is also being manipulative. I had a horrid HORRID partner once and when they left I put them as non-rehireable (hitting on minors, always late, he was a dick) I found out a year later they were hired in another district. So even if she threatens to put you as non rehireable it’s all bullshit.
Plus, they don’t give people a two week notice when they fire them. I’d work till your last day and then peace out. Don’t jeopardize your new job. Your team will understand. If your manager was a good manager they would rework the schedule.
FitLocksmith94561 points6m ago
If you live in AZ, it’s an at will State so technically you don’t even have to put in a 2 weeks notice. If you don’t plan on working for the company ever again( bc likely mgmt will put a note of “not eligible for rehire” on your perm record, you don’t have to work past the date of your last day that you put in writing .
2 weeks notice is a courtesy to the company you are leaving, and not mandatory in AZ. Check out the company handbook for their official stance on it though.
0thereadingalien01 points6m ago
I just found coverage for my last shifts on the schedule
quique772-12 points6m ago
You don’t haaaave to, but if you think you might wanna go back or have them as a reference or simply being a decent human being just work the last days or talk to management and say hey I can’t work so take me off the schedule
plastixhearts [OP]7 points6m ago
so are u basically saying this job requires three week notice? i wanted ti note that I did talk to management- I gave them my two weeks saying my last day would be jan 2 (15 days away), and they told me I am required to work until jan 8 (which is three weeks from today). i just thought that it was typical to give a two week notice
WAtransplant20218 points6m ago
Reach out to your DM for clarification, and if the DM backs the SM, then Ethics and Compliance to get your concern on the record.
In the US as noted above two weeks is a courtesy , not a requirement.
plastixhearts [OP]11 points6m ago
My DM also said I have to work until jan 8. and then berated me for “using starbucks for a degree”. which like I thought the whole point of the tuition thing was for us to go to school and then…. Use the degree?
WAtransplant202111 points6m ago
Just pulled out my Parter Manual. In the April 2020 US Store version under 'Giving Notice' that I received in February 2021, states:
" *If at all possible*, a partner *should* provide two weeks notice to the manager if choosing to resign from employment with Starbucks. "
Go find the relevant section from the online manual, screen shot it to your SM and DM and tell them you're out Jan 2.
I'd still call ethics and compliance though.
WAtransplant20217 points6m ago
Both are full of it. Call ethics and compliance and reaffirm your last day is Jan 2. She just doesn't want to be bothered to find coverage. Your DM is just jelly you're going to be much more successful.
Good luck and congratulations on earning your degree!
ElijahLordoftheWoods5 points6m ago
Does your DM think you should just, keep working in a store now that you have a bachelors? Like wtf?
