The pay decrease will come with your status change. Nothing you can do about it. It wouldn’t be right for a brand new barista to make 27% more than the other baristas without having to do the tasks that the pay increase is for.

I would be more than willing to do the tasks. I want to do the role. I have more than enough work and management experience.

ETA: I would never want to be paid more if I wasn’t doing the role. That’s not the point of my question. I don’t want to change roles. I applied to only that position for a reason. Starbucks allows external hires for these positions. Do I agree with it? no, not necessarily. I think you should always promote within your team first, but perhaps there wasn’t anyone within the team to fill the role and that’s why it was posted.

Yeah but they don’t need you to do the role because they have enough supervisors already.

You did say that you were informed that you were being hired as a barista, they have no need for anymore supervisors, and that the manager told you that the supervisor offer email was a mistake and they’re changing your status.

So I’m not really sure what your expectations are with this situation. .

I understand what you’re saying, which is why I won’t do anything about it. But from a labour law perspective it feels icky. Like any other place where you accept an offer in writing, and complete all your forms as that role, how can it be changed without a demotion?

I’m fine being trained and paid as a barista. She only “informed” me when I asked “how does the team take to external hires for management roles”? That’s when she was like “ohhh yeah, about that…”

Lol I’m not understanding what you’re saying. You came to an agreement that you were to be hired as a barista but you got the mistake offer email and then you ask her about how the team will accept you as management?

It’s just a clerical error. You applied as a shift so the shift offer is what ended up being sent when she decided to hire you. She probably should have had you fill out a new application for barista.

Yeah no i disagree with what the others said. I understand the verbal contract, but anyone who has worked any other job before knows both parties are held to the offer letter. If the Mgr goofed, cool, but they need to fix it with a new offer letter that you choose to accept. In the meanwhile your pay rate while training should be for what your current offer letter says. That's what's in writing, it does not matter what was agreed to in person. Call partner resources and chat with them about it (hr for Starbucks, at least in the states. Canada might have something different) check your handbook.

It’s partner resources in Canada too

Idk if it’s different in other places, but in my district you cannot become a shift until you’ve been a barista for at least six months.

that’s just for promotion, and it’s a general rule that can be overridden by the DM, i believe. outside hires for SSVs are becoming increasingly common and can totally happen without forcing the person to accept a barista role for 6 months first

If you have manager experience you can be hired as a shift but you still gotta go through barista stuff first

I think when they have your application in their system they can only accept it for the position you applied for, so if your application was for the supervisor position that’s what the manager had in their system for you to accept to hired, they can’t change that until after you accept it. Then they would have to change it after. If she told you there were only barista positions available and you agreed to that, then that’s the position you have and will be paid for as long as you’re there. If you do transfer to another store for the shift supervisor position you will likely have to interview with that store manager again for that position. You agreed to being a barista. To get a promotion you always have to interview for the position even if you’ve been a barista for years, and even if you’ve had previous interviews for that same position. Sbux has been doing all sorts of scummy things as of lately so don’t let your manager mislead you, they tend to do things like that.
