credit card tipping (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by dontlook4tme
i work at a high volume drive thru store and everyday we typically have the same person on drive thru window and i found out from one of my coworkers that the person always on dtw (whos a shift btw) always presses no and doesnt give customers the option to tip. My manager is also aware of this but doesn’t do anything because as long as our times are low thats what matters. She put someone there for peak and she gave them the cc reader to tip and she moved her off window🥲 was wondering what good way to go about this is because clearly going to my manager is not an option and i hate to think about how much money we’re missing out on bc of drive thru times.

edit to clarify some stuff: my manager is aware of this. she is often on dto while this shift is on window and she doesn’t do anything about it. another shift brought this up and the one always on window admitted she will not allow people to tip during peak and that she would rather lose money to keep drive times low, and she said it confidently. i want to keep her off window but mt manager wont allow anyone else to be there during peak bc she gets the best times. a lot of you have mentioned how this is wage theft and this needs to be reported to ethics and compliance and i plan to write an email to my dm but me and my coworkers biggest concern is retaliation. my manager has her favorites and is not shy when it comes to treating partners that she does not like poorly.

Um a lot. For me it’s like a 50 dollar difference in my paycheck. You should talk to them about that because it affects all of you. Just tell them all they have to say them is “it’s going to ask you a question just press which option you’d like “… it’s that easy
dontlook4tme [OP] 43 points 6m ago
one of my coworkers called her out on it and she said she refuses to do it during peak and is okay w missing out on tips for low drive times🥲
mondrianna 56 points 6m ago
It makes sense for your SM to care more about drive times just because they get bonuses for being the fastest store in a district. But it really doesn’t make any sense for shifts to be sacrificing their own tips just to make the SM happy.

Also this goes directly against how we were trained to use the CC tipping system. Report your SM to ethics and compliance by scanning the QR code on the Ethics and Compliance card in your BOH. If you don’t have it in your BOH, dm me and I’ll send you a screenshot of the card.

I thought that shifts don't receive tips?
Ashesremindme 16 points 6m ago
Shifts get tips; SMs and ASMs don't.
Specialist_Salt_507 3 points 6m ago
Shift managers in Massachusetts don’t get tips
mondrianna 3 points 6m ago
Shifts are hourly so they get tips. You can see their name on the tip sheet too.
spookbish69 3 points 6m ago
Definitely do something because cc tipping is an extra 100-150 on my paycheck you’re definitely missing out on a good amount of money
Comfortable-Plane944 3 points 6m ago
I’d talk to a shift then and see if they could be placed elsewhere. It’s one thing if it only affected them but it affects everyone. That is not okay
mondrianna 7 points 6m ago
No they need to report this to Ethics and Compliance. They’ve already escalated it to the SM, and nothing has been done. This is a compliance issue on the SM’s part.
b99__throwaway 1 points 6m ago
yeah i’ve started taking the card first & having them push the button then heading stuff out while they do it. i know it’s not standard sequencing but it’s faster that way
Flowerfuls 92 points 6m ago
I get about 50 dollars a day when I work an 8 hour and that’s at a lower volume store. You’re missing out on potentially hundreds depending on how much you work.
kaorirex 2 points 6m ago
how the fuck are you earning $50/day on tips with 8 hour shifts at a lower volume store? \*RESPECTFULLY\*

My own store struggles to give hours to anyone. we get about $15 tip a week with 30 hours or $8-10 tip for a 20 hour week.

I need to find stores like yours
Flowerfuls 4 points 6m ago
The tips are done based on hours you worked that day. I often work eight hour shifts. It’s the same as digital tips so instead of based on weekly. It’s only that day. So less to spread.
clouds183 66 points 6m ago
that should count as wage theft because shes causing all of you to miss out on so many tips.
clouds183 27 points 6m ago
the only time we should ever be touching the screen is to help someone who can’t see it (can only ever press no thank you) or if we need to cash them out in the cafe. and a receipt is always printed to prevent accusations of theft. and theres so many customers who want to tip so once they get used to tipping on it they’ll start asking why you didn’t hand it to them.
mondrianna 10 points 6m ago
Exactly!! Like the whole reason we’re trained to do it the way we’re trained is so the customers don’t think we’re stealing from them all the time!!

Also way to fuck over other stores. “Well the other starbucks doesn’t show me the prompts! You’re just trying to guilt me into tipping you 😡” Please OP report your manager!!!
noccybutter 19 points 6m ago
Call ethics.

Today.

This is inappropriate, not what we’ve been trained to do, and is a violation of the guidelines.

Then, call your District. Explain as kindly as possible that if this isn’t resolved as quickly as it should be, you’ll unfortunately have to follow with their boss. Starbucks has a zero tolerance policy for retaliation, so make sure to self document just in case someone feels like trying something.

I recommend either recording the calls (if you live in a one party state) or emailing to follow up with whomever you talk to. It’s super easy to do this, just state: Hi ‘blank’. Reaching out to clarify everything we talked about (list what was discussed like you were doing a PowerPoint), and thank them for taking your call.

Starbucks enacted this policy to be competitive with local coffee chains (think caribou or Dutch brothers) who they are actively losing baristas to because of the tip gap.

I average 350 USD on my paychecks with cc tips.

That’s not a small amount of money.

Do not let this go. Other baristas in your store could also use this money.

Fuck your SMs bonus.
WayzataMom 19 points 6m ago
Personally I would call the numbers about this. That’s your money they are messing with. Not okay.
caramelsyrupp 8 points 6m ago
the amount of times i’ve been told at my store that i’m not allowed to hand the credit card reader out the window bc “it takes too long” 🫠🫠🫠
mondrianna 15 points 6m ago
Bruh wtf! Report your SM to ethics and compliance! This is literally against how we were trained and is going to get so many more of y’all in trouble if it’s not reported.

First chance your SM will get would be to throw every Barista under the bus for doing exactly what they told them to do. We were trained a certain way for a reason.

I can’t believe there are SMs trying to push Baristas to go against how corporate wants us to use the CC tipping system when the whole reason it took so long for us to get it was because they had to have the routine be designed in this ultra specific way to prevent problems with customers. Too many SMs are so frustrating; we’re just names in a play builder to them.
caramelsyrupp 3 points 6m ago
our whole situation is such a mess. we weren’t trained w the credit card tips whatsoever and even tho our manager tells us to hand it out the window, she’s not always there in the mornings to enforce it. i’ve been yelled at a couple different times for it by a few supervisors so i’ve just given up (even tho they’re not completely wrong. idk what it is but 7/10 customers have no idea what to do w the reader even after i explain it to them)
mondrianna 6 points 6m ago
The training is in the Store Resources app on the iPad in the same section where you see other training content and you can go through it before or after your shift. They provide a kind of script template that’s really easy to say over and over. (“We have a new tipping system. Feel free to press any of those options, “no thank you” is perfectly fine! I just can’t press the button myself.”)

Your SM was supposed to walk everyone through that process of where to access the training because you can be immediately terminated for doing the procedure incorrectly. They were given hours to cover your training for the new CC tipping system, and what my SM told me is that if a partner wasn’t trained on CC tipping they aren’t allowed to process CC payments.

ETA: So you should report your SM even more for not giving you guys time to train on it and also forcing you to work without the training.
caramelsyrupp 3 points 6m ago
oh wow thank u sm for all the info!!
eggospoptart 6 points 6m ago
You guys should go to an independent cafe that pays an actual liveable wage and mobile tips are like $300 per person per week (not including daily cash tips)
Legitimate-Essay4387 4 points 6m ago
When building the play last week I put my store manager on window and actually coached her on how to improve her window times with the cc reader and tipping. She was very receptive and praised me for the positive coaching. She also acknowledged that it’s a learning curve for not only for the barista at DTR but the customer and the more we coach the customer the quicker our window times have gotten. We are a very high volume store and one of the fastest of not fastest in our district. It’s about working as a team and still working to uplift customers through every single cup of coffee.
Ok-Description4413 3 points 6m ago
I am typically on DTO/DTR because I’m pretty new. This CC tipping is NOT HARD. You see a card in their hand, hit the button on the register, grab the card from their hand, hold out the reader say “please answer this for me”, once the click it which takes like 2 seconds, stick their card in, hand out order while it’s processing, and then return card. Literally not slow and not hard
UnitedScore1481 3 points 6m ago
Definitely something you should go to your DM about, if shifts and SM won’t do anything about it, find someone that will !
Twiggy-Leo 2 points 6m ago
She says she’s “okay with losing out on tips as long as there are low times”…. The amount of privilege that implies is crazy. She has no idea the financial situations of her fellow coworkers. What if these tips mean the difference between working a second job or not? What if the tips make the difference between paying rent or not, taking care of your kids or not? Just because SHE can go without tips doesn’t mean it’s okay to subject everyone else to that. Honestly disgusting behavior in my opinion.
Purple_Coffee653 2 points 6m ago
I cleared over 1K last payday because of tipping, with our hours being cut across the board, the store shouldn't prevent you from being able to break even during these times. I would take this to your DM and make a complaint to ethics. You guys work hard especially during peak for tips, it takes not that much time to say hey here's the card reader and look away while they make the choice.

Lmaooooo managers can’t give the small worker the 50ish dollars of tips ppl deserve ArE U cRAzy?! How would the mangers get their 1000$+ bonuses for OTW times ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
tacobellfan222 2 points 6m ago
I think you should talk to supervisors / trainers about training and enforcing CC tips. Kind of a way to go around your manager and still get everyone on the same page. If you lead by example and people realize the benefits of it, everyone else is likely to follow along because at the end of the day they’ll want the $$
Bhaisaab86 1 points 6m ago
We’re not allowed to click ANY tip option, even the “no thank you/$0” option. I’m almost 100% certain it’s one of those grounds for termination rules. So, uh. Call your DM and tell them everything. Call partner resources.

Your coworker (and manager) are essentially stealing wages from everyone in your store. My store averages around $2-$4/hr in credit card tips. That’s a lot of money that you and your partners AREN’T getting paid.
shellybean8760 1 points 6m ago
I would try to contact your district manager bc literally they are messing up EVERYONEs opportunity to get a much bigger paycheck especially at this time of yeah
Mireina44 1 points 6m ago
As a customer the last few drive thrus I've gone thru at Starbucks didn't have a tip option 🤔
dontlook4tme [OP] 1 points 6m ago
i believe it was officially rolled out at every us store this week!! my store was lucky enough to get it a few weeks ago but if you ever see the barista press a button or mess w the card reader before taking your card they could possibly be pressing no for you
vegan-trash 1 points 6m ago
My store gets $160-210 PER DAY and it took some pushback but I told all my coworkers that this pays bills. The company implemented tipping, they expect Times to go up a little until everyone is on board and used to it.
streetratroadie 1 points 6m ago
Find a way to support getting them off window for peak. They’re probably uncomfortable with it. Doing the CC reader during peak literally gives me an upset stomach and nausea bc I’m so pressed for times and every single customer just sits there and stares at it while my SM is getting mad at us. Also can’t charge and hand out at the same time like we were yelled at to do. But if we ALL do the same thing we are supposed to do, it will become normal more quickly for the customer. Instead of a customer having an experience of “well they didn’t have me do that yesterday” and maybe it’ll convince more people to just use the dang app so we can scan and get them out quicker. Idk. I still hate this new thing. In store it makes sense. But no other company let’s people use Apple Pay in the drive thru or hands them a cc reader. It’s weird
skely_skeleton 1 points 6m ago
you really need to go to your DM about this and if they do nothing move to ethnics and compliance
Outrageous-Radish-83 1 points 6m ago
You need to talk to someone abt it asap for me it’s like an extra 150 bucks on a paycheck
verdeuce 1 points 6m ago
Call your dm/prsc that’s wage theft
drewdrop26 1 points 6m ago
It takes two seconds. “The card reader is gonna prompt you for a tip,” and hand it out. Boom. Doesn’t take any time out of your handoff. You should report your SSV and SM to your district manager.
Both-Selection-5302 1 points 6m ago
That is all kinds of ways f…… up. Definitely Dm time.Chain of command. They can not retaliate. If both won’t do anything it’s time to get ethics involved.
Puzzleheaded_Lie706 1 points 6m ago
That’s actually considered an LP
Violation. My paychecks are so much bigger now. But We cannot press anything on there, the customer has to. The only time I’ve pressed it, it’s helping a customer out and I’ve let them know, what they would like me to press
philosopher_cat_lady 1 points 6m ago
Tell your DM
dirtychai0218 1 points 6m ago
every week i print out the amount of cc tips we made the previous week to remind everyone if they don’t hold out the reader i’m beating they ass i made almost $90 extra just from cc tips this paycheck
Wonderful-Put-5972 1 points 6m ago
Was a shift for a decade and always got tips. Still a shift and still get tips
Wonderful-Put-5972 1 points 6m ago
I got $44 last week from credit card tipping!! That's a whole tank of gas! And WTAF! You can call Partner Resources for guidance too.
weerbine 1 points 6m ago
Take this straight to your DM. If they do nothing, contact HR. That is beyond unacceptable.
desjonquillesjaunes 1 points 6m ago
definitely report to your dm and/or ethics. we were never supposed to be taking cards to begin with, but now it’s a fire-able offense to touch the screen and take cards. there’s been multiple cases that are under investigation in my district since the digital tips started because of it
R1P2MYOUTH 1 points 6m ago
yeah no, this is NOT okay. a shorter drive time isnt worth losing out on money you *could* be earning. this definitely seems like a fireable offense and i would reach out to your DM as soon as possible

edit to add: anyone that may have this issue in their store: REPORT IMMEDIATELY. it actually makes me so angry that they've pushed drive times so hard that its brought people to voluntarily lose money for themselves, and other partners as well.
