Seems to be going around right now. My district is getting hit with a similar scammer

Which state do you work in?
Do you have guidelines in place to stop people from getting away with this?
We are not allowed to do any returns over $20

Follow corporate policy, and nothing else. Don't be accusatory, don't fight it, let it play out and report concerns to your SM or DM.
I worked when the cash back scam was going on. My SM was not happy and was kinda lazy so never left correspondence or came in to tell us what's up. The DM specifically told us to drain the safe if we had to, but just give them the cash back in accordance to the law. We didn't (per the SM's instruction), wrote an incident report when they threatened us, and my SM almost got fired but was transferred instead.
Starbucks has the resources to absorb the loss until they can make better mechanisms again this scam. I imagine they'd prefer you to notify the SM/DM or authorities when this individual comes in for a refund

Our store policy is that if the return is over $20 we have to get the SM.

Then let them deal with it.
It really sucks dealing with the scammers, but when its cash and fraud, you do NOT want to be in the way of either side.
I no longer work for the siren, but my current place of employment has had multiple people, even managers, who got so worked up about theft they did something wrong. Insta-fire. Suspension within 12hr and separated a day or two later. Companies factor this kind of loss into calculations and have their methods of dealing with it if it's at an unacceptable level.

We’ve had a guy coming in and doing the same thing, pretty popular scam.

Since it’s credit card no but you can say that store policy is store credit after $20

I’d honestly pull judgement of “doing the return” to “assume positive intent”, but taking a picture of the receipt and uploading it to an incident report because if there’s a CC or time stamp from another store, you’ve got his info and they can review the cameras. If he gets pissed just explain that corporate needs a “copy of the receipt” with all cup returns to promote quality assurance, even if it’s just a return due to dislike or not wanted.

My store got hit with a scammer a month or two ago but we didn't comply and he jumped over the counter to try and punch one of my shifts. They ended up calling the cops but he and his friend fled before they got there. However, we recently found out they got busted last week/2 or so weeks ago. Literally the news article says smtn along the lines of "starbucks scammers caught" lmao
He was trying to refund a large mobile order of multiple cups.

I got swung at over the counter for not being able to accept a fake $100. Didn’t call him out on it, just told him I wouldn’t be able to accept the bill at that time. He got irate, swung at me (missed) then reached across the counter and ripped the fake bill out of my hands. I was seconds away from handing the bill back to him, I wasn’t keeping it from him or anything. He just immediately got angry.

Meh, Starbucks as a corporation is a bigger thief than this guy for how much money they put away vs what they pay employees

I would just tell him there is no guarantee that he or someone else hasn’t use them so we can’t return cups. That’s what my manger told me to say.
