valid transfer reason? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Mysterious_Card_2967
i've been working at starbucks for around 3 months; when applying, i applied to a store that is closer to me but never heard anything back so i applied to a different one (longer drive and less busier) and was hired immediately

i usually close or work shifts later in the day because of school. since i'm newer and this store is one of the oldest in the area (a lot of the baristas that have been there longer than me are prioritized on bar and asked what position they want to go to), i'm always put on dto for hours on end and rarely get bar time. a ssv from the other store came to cover at my store and said they're actively hiring and their store is severely untrained so i would overall get more hours and bar time, while their store is also way busier compared to mine for later hours (my current store usually loses customers by 4pm and i'm always there until 7 or later)

is this a valid reason to ask for a transfer? i do continue to work at starbucks when i move away for school next year so i think working in a busier store will prepare me for that, i just don't know the right way to approach my sm about this.

any advice?

the 6 month thing is not company policy and moreso an sm preference thing so I’d say request a transfer and talk to the other sm.

Honestly, if you're looking to transfer, my go to excuse is to lie and say I'm moving. My sm didn't question me when I said that lol

I talked to my DM about how the store I wanted to go to was 15 minutes closer to my house versus the one I was at, and I was sick of spending money on the gas. Got transferred quick. Good luck!

I'd also recommend trying to cover some shifts at that store and get the feel/vibe and make sure you want to transfer! If they are undertrained and busy but understaffed, it may be a special kind of hell you want a heads up on. Just you can make an informed decision.

Don't quote me on this, but I believe you cannot transfer within six months of your hire date. Once that six month mark is met, you can request a transfer, but it needs to be approved by your SM and the new store's SM and they are never guaranteed. Talk to your SSVs and ask for more bar time. New partners usually don't get that for the first few months anyways, but if you ask for it they should make room for you to learn more on it. Food for thought.

thing is, i have asked and i rarely ever get time; i'm only covering for 10s/30s and then get put back on dt. newer partners come into the middle of my shift (during peak) and immediately get put on bar before me. if/when they put me on bar, it's later in the night and the store is pretty dead. i think it's because i'm not there too often (maybe 2-3 days a week) and i'm younger, but i feel confident on bar when they put me on - they just don't

edit: maybe it's just the way i think but i think having a fresh start at a new store would offer me more opportunities since i would join the team knowing how to do everything. it wouldn't hurt to ask to go around the 6 month rule. also, speaking to the ssv from the other store has told me that partners at his store hate bar because they were never properly trained so that would allow me a lot more time there

no matter the reason, i’m 99% sure transfer requests can not be denied. they can take up to 90 days to process, but they can’t tell you that you can’t transfer (unless the store you want to transfer to isn’t hiring/accepting transfers)
