Does anyone actually know wtf the refreshers are? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Zealousideal-Star448
I’ve worked 3 different stores in my time as a barista and have been told 3 different things as to what refresher bases are/ how they are made.
First one said it was from the coffee cherry, second one said it’s the water/ aftermath from decafing the beans. And a third said it’s not from coffee at all and is actually green tea.

Wtf is I’m going to loose my mind please someone tell me
Solid_Wish 302 points 6m ago
It is flavored white grape juice with green coffee extract. Idk where the decaf water came from.
BatWeary 57 points 6m ago
i’m so confused about the decaf water lol
ItzBoogieMan 19 points 6m ago
Decaf water 😂😂😂
Zealousideal-Star448 [OP] 1 points 6m ago
Yea the shift that told me said they kinda “boil” the beans a lot and the liquid is the caffeine and leaves the beans with very little to no caffeine. They water/ juice is the refresher and they add stuff to make it taste good. And it’s a way for Starbucks to get around dumping waste or something. He was very loud about that part lol

The decaf water I think is in reference to the green coffee extract (water) being the caffeine byproduct of decaffeinating beans

Thank you my mind is now at peace
Renyx 12 points 6m ago
These ingredients are listed right on the base containers and in the online/app menu.
Beg1nAga1n 5 points 6m ago
Just commenting to say that this is correct.
Zealousideal-Star448 [OP] 1 points 6m ago
Wait a new question has occurred. Wine?
jordanshaw89 137 points 6m ago
Our refreshers are made using green coffee extract. beans that are not of roasting quality are washed and pressed to extract the caffeine, then mixed with white grape juice and natural flavors. For anyone interested, the Coffee academy is open to all, including customers 😁 (Source: coffee master/ASM)

This is the way
Zealousideal-Star448 [OP] 1 points 6m ago
NEW QUESTION WILL IT IN THEORY WINE?
jordanshaw89 2 points 6m ago
Actually yeah, I think it would given that it has a loooot of sugar, I wonder though if the acidity or caffeine may effect yeast growth though?
Zealousideal-Star448 [OP] 1 points 6m ago
I’m starting it this week! Coffee 200 lesson is loaded for the holidays
Danny_z64 25 points 6m ago
They're refreshing
DeepFriedJoseph 14 points 6m ago
I could go for a very berry hibiscus right now, I don’t know why they always take the good shit away.
olivinemultichrome 4 points 6m ago
Cool Lime tho 😭
richayy420 2 points 6m ago
I was in Luxembourg last weekend and there cool lime refresher was much more fruity than sweet. It was delicious
olivinemultichrome 1 points 6m ago
It’s great with tequila
caitlin_marie_gg 16 points 6m ago
“decaf water”💀
ConductorMeaty 14 points 6m ago
literally just flavored white grape juice with caffeine. and people are willing to pay $7+ for it.
rajeno 14 points 6m ago
I think of them as either an adult capri sun or baby’s first energy drink
GoodJibblyWibbly 3 points 6m ago
And to think for $7 you can buy most of the stuff you need to make like 8 cups of a homemade pink drink (minus the caffeine part)
Ruxsti 7 points 6m ago
They do have about the same amount of caffeine as a cup of tea of the wouldn't size
weirdpodcastaunt 4 points 6m ago
… you have the box? Why not just look at it? Especially if people are saying conflicting info, it’s pretty simple to check that, or the app for ingredients, in the future.
Zealousideal-Star448 [OP] 1 points 6m ago
What app? The Starbucks order and pay app for customers? Or Is it on the ipad
weirdpodcastaunt 1 points 6m ago
Both maybe? But definitely on the customer app. And most of our packaging .
eliettgrace 3 points 6m ago
it’s green coffee bean extract to give it caffine, the juice itself is white grape juice
darkwolf523 2 points 6m ago
What the fuck is decaf water
Zealousideal-Star448 [OP] 1 points 6m ago
Idk he said they like boiled them and they greesey water was the juice and filled with caffeine while the beans were not caffeine free
AllyC19402 2 points 6m ago
It’s the coffee cherry, they also have caffeine and I know when first launched were almost an energy drink- like a Redbull
-Zispy 2 points 6m ago
It literally says on the ingredients: green coffee extract.

If you’re talking about the caffeine in them, the first is correct. Second two are ridiculously off base.

Starbucks SAYS it’s the “green coffee” so before being roasted, the fresh bean after being washed/dried/etc. but I think it’s just juice and doesn’t even really have caffeine content.
Zealousideal-Star448 [OP] 5 points 6m ago
It does a grande has the same amount as a coke can
Boundtoloveyou 3 points 6m ago
Roughly.
sweetxfracture 2 points 6m ago
I just figured whatever anyone feels is from the sugar rush. Good to know!

Also.. not sure why I got downvoted so much? Y’all are weird..lol
Zealousideal-Star448 [OP] 1 points 6m ago
Idk why everyone is so quick to downvote I’m here to learn that’s why we have shit like this. Learn from other’s experiences.
GoodJibblyWibbly 1 points 6m ago
It is required by the USDA that caffeine content be included on labels, so I think the caffeine is probably actually there. That said there’s probably enough sugar in those things to kill a horse so I’d agree, at least most of the energy you feel is likely sugar related
sweetxfracture 1 points 6m ago
Like everyone at Starbucks huh 😭 I didn’t know the FDA required that! Thank you for the info
