People trying to order at the bar (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Regular_Shine155
Has anyone else experienced customers trying to order at the bar and being super rude when politely told “oh sorry I don’t have a cash here, but [partner on front] can help you at the other end of the counter!” It’s like their whole demeanour changes and they just give me stink eye until they leave?? Some people roll their eyes or scoff as if I’m not slammed with drinks (we’re the busiest store in our district) and am just too lazy to take their order. Does it come off as rude to redirect someone to the proper spot??? Like I genuinely don’t know if I’m doing something wrong or if people are just misinterpreting? I’m always nice to them and thank them after I’ve explained. It’s not a huge deal but can be a bit frustrating sometimes. Of course not everyone is like this but I’ve noticed it happening a lot more recently

We don't get people getting mad when we explain usually, but I'm guessing some people get embarrassed and would rather be mean than let it show

Yep this is it. Thats why some get mad when we have any questions about their order. They may start to feel embarrassed cuz they think us asking a question means automatically that theyre dumb. So they get angry rather than showing their embarrassment

Yeppp. Usually I just let them order if it’s coming out of their mouth and then tell them, sounds good, we will ring you in right over here.

Yepp ive done the same lmao i have been on bar actively working on multiple drinks and people have come up to the register before and stood right in front of it and I greet the customer from bar because the espresso machines are next to the registers and the customer acknowledges my greeting and then they start to order but I let them say whatever they're saying and then I tell them that somebody will be right with them.

I had a person come up to me on bar TWICE and try to order from me within 5 minutes. I politely told her the first time that they would help her at the REGISTER down at the end, and the second time I looked at her, looked directly at the registers that she had just ordered at before, and said 'AGAIN, they will help you at the REGISTER AT THE END!' And she just looked confused the entire time. Ma'am does it LOOK LIKE I, MAKING DRINKS, AM THE ONE WHO WILL RING YOU UP ON THE REGISTER???????

Fool me once

Also the evergreen “oh, can I get some water with the drink you just handed me?”
Ok_Lake9988 14 points 6m ago
What I don’t understand too is your making drinks you would have to be touch money WHILE MAKING DRINKS 🤨🤢

technicallyyyyyyyy if the barista on POS also gathers brewed coffee/tea and pastries/warming, they’re handling both money and drinks/food. (imo it’s not made clear enough in the training, but for the record you’re supposed to wash your hands after you handle cash or a customer’s card. common sense, maybe, but i’ve coached a lot of baristas on this.)

in any case i honestly doubt it’s a factor most customers consider, since customers have impatiently asked me to get their mobile order/a straw/ice water while i am clearly handling trash.

I’ve had people do this to me on drive bar. I’m like behind glass with a headset on, there’s 6 other people on the floor that are waaayyy more accessible and you’re coming up to me? I can’t even hear you?

I used to love letting people who did this tell me their whole order and then, as soon as they were done, tell them they need to order at the register.

We just remodeled, so people actually wander between both ends of the bar and then laugh when we finally tell them
Muted_Obligation4501 8 points 6m ago
I just steam the machine and look at them
darkwolf523 6 points 6m ago
Always. Im like bruh I know you see the register.

It’s like… customer nature to migrate towards the first person who greets them. It used to be the cafe register partner who would greet the customers. And they would always approach the registers to order.

Ever since mobile orders launched, there hasn’t been a planted cafe register partner. And the infernal push to be the Moe’s of coffee by having every partner shout “hello” only leaves the customers confused and angry.

I will never forget that time when I was on DTO looking for someone's mobile and a group of middle school boys asked me for 3 Trenta waters. Keep in mind this was during peak. If you could read facial expressions and body language, you would tell that I was stressed.

I wanna say other coffee shops, like smaller independent ones, may allow you to order at the bar to pay and receive at the register. That's my only thought on it other than people don't know what a order here sign says
maine_coon2123 1 points 6m ago
Ohh yeah like at Cafe Nero it’s the opposite. Drinks/pastries at the counter then slide down to pay
BigDillLadyPickle 1 points 6m ago
Oh no no no you were correct to do that.
jillybrews226 1 points 6m ago
I wondering they do that at Panera or chipotle

I make coffee for a different company these days and I get this all the time. It’s very strange.
