Has anybody had difficulties with customers pertaining to the new tip system(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by DeepFriedJoseph
Recently, I’ve seen it all over social media that customers have been rude or have issues with the new tip system with debit cards. I have yet to encounter issues other than questions.

I've had a couple people get visibly annoyed but I just tell them that tipping isn't required and they can just press no. That usually shuts them up.

No, never. My customers tell me they’re super glad they can tip via CC now. But the internet exists for clicks…

I haven’t personally, but I overheard a customer telling one of my coworkers super rudely “oh we’re getting tips for doing our jobs now.” Like no one is forcing you to tip and also, yeah you usually do tip people for doing their job for providing a service to you.

Subway has been doing this same method for almost 3 years already and I’ve never heard a complaint.
badatlife158 points6m ago
Yeah I truly think the only reason why people are mad is bc now they realize we can see that they are actively not tipping, but it’s like tip jars have always been there.

ive seen people be frustrated bc its hard to see the screen in the sun, but i let them just grab the PED system so they can take it in their car out of the cold/sunshine etc. other than that i havent heard any complaints which is really relieving. They just arent used to it yet, which tbf, neither am i!!

are we allowed to do this? bc my hand was FREEZING last time i did DT 😵💫 a few customers just sorta take it and i just let them, it feels so awkward to stand there and hold it for them sometimes
mimitalu8 points6m ago
We were told in training for CC tips to just start handing it to them. I still just hold it out and let my hand go numb lol but we can definitely just hand it to them
IndustrySerious5 points6m ago
I literally say you can grab the card reader and they still just look at it and let me hold it. I do that bc when I’m soloing on bar, I could take the other order.

yes, I have had a few people fully melt down and say the job doesn't deserve tips so we shouldn't ask and a few make little remarks about paying the company for overpriced drinks and our paychecks

The ignorance 🙄

I had one lady ask me, “Oh my God, why do they make you guys do this??” To which I answered with my biggest customer service grin, “Because it raises our hourly wage by a couple dollars.” 😊 She was like-“wait, this is for you guys?”
caramelsyrupp8 points6m ago
yes. there's usually a glare so people can't see the screen and they usually give me attitude about that. most of the time i just get annoyed looks but they won't say anything. i've had a few people say "well i wouldn't have paid with card if i knew i was gonna have to do it myself, this is terrible"

I have a customer that, every time it pops up, he very loudly sighs and rolls his eyes. But he hasn't said anything about it. A few of my coworkers have had encounters before where the customer will sit and complain that we're "asking for handouts"
CatalyticGenesis6 points6m ago
we've had it for about a month now and only had two problem customers with it. one got sent away without a drink to try again the next day which i love. favorite reaction to extremely rude customers.

Okay they have this same type of thing in other order at the counter restaurants like Panera. I just tap whatever I prefer to do and move on with my day. The people who make a big deal over it, and act annoyed and bitch is because they know deep down they are ungrateful, entitled assholes and they know they are wrong not to tip. So they throw a tantrum.
Alefur3 points6m ago
Haven't had any issues on this so far. I just say "We have a new option with Cards that involves tipping, you can oress no if you want." Most people are happy to tip, people who don't just don't say anything and wait for their drinks.
Environmental-Mail403 points6m ago
I started telling the customer, "The system will ask for gratuity which is not required" and smile so they feel more comfortable and not forced to leave a tip. It has helped. The tips have increased. Not saying I haven't had a few jack-holes! When this happens I kindly explain, "Tipping by credit card is due to CUSTOMERS requesting we add this option"! Yeah, they feel rather silly then for asking the questions. 😁😉

This is genius!

I have not yet experienced a complaint with the new system. I have gotten a couple positive comments.

thankfully, no. my store is a very small cafe store that doesn’t make a lot so the majority of our customers are loyal regulars who have gotten to know us well. people should know by now that tips really help people, especially those who don’t make enough to make ends meet
twistedstarfall2 points6m ago
I've had a myriad of issues though a lot of people are definitely excited about it. There's just the occasional naysayer.
I did however have a guy berate me about it for a few minutes and then it turned out he tipped me 5 dollars. My pain felt a little transactional then lol
Life_deep_2 points6m ago
i just like being able to tell if someone is going to tip before they pay. i’m like 98% accurate
coffeeactuary2 points6m ago
Only issue I’ve had is customers grabbing the card reader and pressing fingers on the screen as they take it and it selects a random tip, which makes them angry and we have to refund the tip.
mimitalu2 points6m ago
We had one person say it was "completely unprofessional" to ask for tips to one of our baristas, but as far as I know, no one else
Deep_Mission_49981 points6m ago
people will be like “uhhh,,, i guess?!!!” and get so angry… like its completely optional…
or people just ignore you and dont do anything even tho u tell them a few times
or people saying it seems “pressured”
Few_Conclusion_88241 points6m ago
I’ve had multiple customers be like urgh why should I leave a tip and one customer who said that and then left a dollar tip and asked if she could have a bigger size drink instead 🤷♂️

Had my first one yesterday when a regular basically threw a tantrum in the dt about it and for whatever reason he was refusing to hit the buttons himself when I tried to explain that I’m not allowed to hit them. He usually tips cash, which is great, so I’m not sure really what the fuss was. He just kept mentioning how it was stupid that we were forcing him to tip. Besides that though I haven’t had much bad reactions personally, have had some customers get excited about it and others who mostly don’t seem to care either way.
