Snow storm, Starbucks and called out(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Fair_Campaign_1760
I called my store to tell them my car was stock in snow and that I was freezing. They told me they could send me and pay me a taxi. I said no again bc I don’t feel safe in a taxi when the roads are iced.
They told me they could send a partner to pick me up, I said no again bc it’s not only the road, it’s also My health, I live in Lex, Ky, right know is -28 F. They told me they Will put that as a called out. Can someone tell me if they can do that? This is a life threatening snow storm. It’s something I cannot control

they can and will bc you’re calling out. i had to call out for the same reason, it’s -40F windchill where i’m at.

Similar here, glad my shift let me off for the day, I drive nearly over an hour to my location 😭
Ashleybux43 points6m ago
They can do that per the inclement weather policy. If the store is open, you are expected to be there for your shift.
miniinovaa39 points6m ago
I mean yeah you’re calling out but you won’t (or shouldn’t anyway) be fired or anything over it unless you’re already having issues or like write ups

That's so stupid that they would want barista's risking there lives to go make coffee.
groovydoll12 points6m ago
and people say thanks for being open * *no tip* *

I bailed too. My husband is a trucker and was stuck on the side of the road all night in an 18 wheeler so I figured that didn't bear too well for me in my mid size car...plus I would have had to drop off my kids at my moms house and driving on icy roads is one thing but yourself but with a 6 and 2 year old.. No

In the other large ky city, I was supposed to go in and close tonight and would’ve been calling out as well, but my store ended up closing early due to the number of callouts already. My neighborhood roads still haven’t been cleared. Don’t feel bad for calling out! Roads are still bad and the windchill has us in the -20s. Your safety is more important than 15 an hour. And if anything happened you’d be replaced in a heart beat.

My store close early today for the same reason

Not worth risking your life for minimum wage 🤷🏻♀️

we only had our DT open today due to bad weather, a lot of people didn’t show up apparently
overturned231 points6m ago
We closed at 6 pm today because of the weather. Had to argue with the district manager to have that happen 🙄
sammieduck694201 points6m ago
i always just respond with “i know you want to but the reason i cannot show up is because of unsafe travel conditions. i appreciate the gesture but if it’s unsafe transporting myself, i won’t be substituting with someone else so i appreciate the understanding have a good day” and end it at that whether they want to say something back or not.

Canada?
DunderMifflin-ThisIs21 points6m ago
No way this is Canada. If it was they'd take a snow mobile if they had to and pack a hockey stick just in case they got stuck in traffic to play a quick game while waiting.
adilsyk7 points6m ago
Can confirm I travel with a hockey stick
w0rmm6 points6m ago
Can confirm, Canadian partner currently working rn
ItzBoogieMan2 points6m ago
can confirm, -30 Celsius and i bus to work
LecLurc155 points6m ago
They listed on °F so definitely not. I’m in Canada and the west coast has been hit hard w snowstorms this year. The city I’m in has terrible infrastructure so a lot of people aren’t able to get to work at the moment. Even our airports are fucked.
adilsyk1 points6m ago
As someone from the west coast well I hate the rain
LecLurc152 points6m ago
I feel u buddy. It rains almost all year here. At least it used to. Now our summers are brutal thx global warmin
Lcolecrochet1 points6m ago
*laughs in California*
LecLurc152 points6m ago
We get cali heat level summers too, which would be okay but nobody here has AC. Global warming hitting us hard (41°C to -15°C, aka 105°F to 5°F) might get even colder than that in the new year. Ten yrs ago the hottest it would get was 32C and coldest was -3C. L world
kelvin_bot5 points6m ago
105°F is equivalent to 40°C, which is 313K. --- ^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)

my store was supposed to have 3 today. we had 2. one a green bean learning bar. i had to juggle warming, brewing, register, and bar and didn't get a break for 5 hours because people kept waiting twenty minutes in the long ass line to come place an order with me and i sure as shit wasn't leaving a green bean to handle that hell alone for ten minutes.
please just show show some respect for your teammates and get your shift covered. starbucks the corporation doesn't give a fuck if your store performs so poorly that they have to close it, they'll open ten more in a different city.
