Not allowed to use sick time for snow storm? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Sea-Ad1522
I was scheduled to open today and be at work at 4am. At that time we where under a level 2 snow emergency (Ohio) I live on a cul-de-sac and my whole neighborhood never gets touched by plows. It was -20 wind chill and ice and snow. I have an old car that’s low to the ground and it’s all I can afford. This morning was a struggle. So I texted my sm and opening shift telling them I couldn’t get out of my cup-de-sac. The snow wasn’t supposed to stop till 8am and I would have struggled even more to get home. My guess is the other partner scheduled to open also had problems as 30 minutes later my sm texted everyone that we will be opening at 7am instead. I was only scheduled 4:30-9 anyway.
I then asked my sm if I could use sick pay for today (I have a ton build up) she said yes. Then an hour later she texted me and said she was told explicitly not to use sick pay for people today. I thought we where allowed too but this seems like a district manager decision.

I think you forgot to tell your manager that you slipped on the ice and twisted your ankle and that's the real reason you can't come in. 😎

Sick hours are only allowed to be used if you, a close family member or service animal are sick and you have to take care of them. Or something among those lines. Sick hours cannot be used to bolster your paycheck as per the siren. But if your story conveniently changes to my sister fell and I had to bring her to the hospital you can go ahead.

Not a dm decision, there’s an inclement weather policy that we have to follow

can you expand your explanation on this policy

if you call in, you don't have to tell the partner leading the floor anything other than "i am sick." you are then able to use your sick time for the missed shift.

The store shouldn't even be open. If it's not safe to get there or be there corporate policy states the store is supposed to close and pay all employees the wage and hours they would have made that day
