Would you call in due to inclement weather? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by swisschalamet
For context, I live in Canada and for the past 24 hours we have been experiencing a literal blizzard. Wind gusts up to 100 km/h, snow, and flash freezing. As of typing this is is -15C (+5F for context) and the roads are complete ice. I don’t even think salt/snow trucks have been out yet since the weather is ongoing.

ANYWAYS I live about a 20-30 minute drive from my store and am so scared to drive. Not only would I have to drive in dangerous conditions but also clear off my car in freezing temps and high winds.

I have worked at my store for almost 3 years and in that time we have closed 1 half day, aka, we NEVER close. My SM is opening and if the world was ending she’d be there working. I want to call in but know I’ll probably get reamed for it. I feel like my safety is more of a priority than showing up for a 4.75 hour shift but idk. Will/can I get written up for this? What would ya’ll do in my situation?

I did this last week for a major major storm in my state. Lots of people had to. Do not risk your life for the siren, I didn’t for a 10 min drive, you shouldnt for 30.

I called out too. Had a bad feeling about going in, my shift was understanding. Plus it was slow anyway

Yeah, I called in for the snow/ice. Your safety is always more important

Definitely call out. Your safety is more important.

If you don’t feel comfortable telling your SM that the driving conditions are too hazardous, just say you woke up suddenly throwing up everywhere. Vomiting is a food safety concern and they can’t make you work.

I called and my SM was like ‘okay it would’ve been nice if you gave us more notice’ but I literally called the second the store opened. She doesn’t like when we text her outside of working hours (understandably) and I didn’t want to make a call too far in advance. At this point I’m just laughing

Well, if she wants more notice, she’ll need to let you text or call her outside of work hours 🤷‍♂️ She’s salaried for a reason. Both of my home stores (I ended up moving and had to transfer) have had SMs whose opinion on calling outside of work hours is “if it’s important, absolutely call/text me - you’re an adult, you know when it can wait to the next day and when it can’t”. If she makes it that hard to call out, she deserves the no-notice, honestly.
