Anyone have any ideas to help my skin? (reddit.com)
submitted by Agreeable-Shock7306
Hey ya’ll! I use O’keefe’s Working Hands and B&BW’s hemp lotion pretty religiously as they’re the only lotions that work. Still, the skin on my hand feels very tight and dry and will crack and bleed. Also I think my arm is reacting to the sanitizer? Just wondering if anyone had any ideas to help with this.

Any lotion but layer aquaphor/Vaseline on top of it. It will take time to heal but this will seal it for now!

get some cotton gloves, you can get a cheap pack of them on amazon, completely cover your hands in lotion (i like vaseline deep moisture cream, burt’s bees hand repair, regular vaseline, or palmers) and it should really make a difference by the morning!!

edit: yes, the sanitizer irritates my hands so much, i think it’s contact dermatitis and the cold weather makes it so much worse.

Yes a lot of people do this and wear them to sleep !

not sure if this is allowed but my manager has never said anything, but seriously consider some dishwashing gloves. they are lifesavers and you can get the dishes done faster as you can grab the hot dishes without burning your fingers (quiiiite as fast anyways lol). i have my own pair bc sharing gloves is ew

Always wash your hands after they have been submerged in sani water. If you can't wash them at least rinse them off.

At least once every 3 hours, wash your hands with hot water, then lightly dry them with a paper towel and immediately (i mean immediately) lotion them. If your store doesn't have any, buy some Curel or Eucerine. Once that dries completely lotion them again and rub it in really well.

On the really dry spots, cover with Vaseline after lotioning. If you put vaseline on by itself it will not moisturize your hands. It's a sealant that keeps in the lotion's moisture.

I thought I was the only one with this issue. I find the more I dip my hands into the sani bucket the worse my hands feel. I dont have any advice unfortunately, other than asking for gloves if using it. As for lotions I’ll be checking out this thread for recommendations from the commenters. Thank you and good luck!

anything like vaseline, aquaphor or something with lanolin in it. slather it on at night and wear some gloves, there are some cotton ones for this purpose. if you have any cracks deep enough it starts bleeding cover in vaseline etc and put a bandaid or two on it. and wearing gloves at work helps a lot. keeping your skin in a moist and warm environment is optimal for healing. spot test for lanolin though as some people are allergic or sensitive to it.

Lol, those are my hands on a good day. My knuckles are all purple and cracked and if I go a day without lotion I pretty much have a rash.

The best thing for me has been slathering a thick layer of aquaphor AND o’keefe’s, then putting on cotton gloves for the night. If it’s really bad, buy a steroid cream and it pretty much heals you overnight. Just be careful with that stuff.

lotion will only help so much but starting at the source will help a ton. you can get an accommodation to bring your own hand soap and have the company order you dishwashing gloves.

eta: also you can refuse to do dishes until they give you dishwashing gloves, or just only do the ones that can go in the hobart and leave the rest for others to deal with and explain your reasoning.

One of my coworkers has been with the company a super long time and she says that the Eucerin hand cream is the best!

I used to take Aquaphor and put a bunch across my knuckles, wrap it in cling wrap, and put socks over my hands for the night! It’s great for cracked, bleeding knuckles bc I find that using lotion when they’re to that point for me can cause stinging. If they’re not cracked but looking rough, the same thing but with baby oil!

mine used to do that! It would get worse and worse by the week. During the day if i wasn’t working it’s be dry and cracked, and after a shift it would be raw and bright red- and burn all night if I put anything on it. They stayed super dry and fragile until eventually the just like stopped? They were still weak but super soft, like all the top layers were burned off. It never stopped hurting during work, but they stopped glaring up so red afterwards. I actually think my hands aged a lot during that time so don’t give up on finding a solution like I did.

See a doctor if possible, they might be able to prescribe something for this. Or just use lotion and gloves to keep the moisture in, but that’s more of a bandaid solution

Thick layer of lotion or ointment and gloves before bed. Use non scented lotion at work on break.

i use the okeefes working hands too, but the night one, it’s thicker and lasts longer imo. i also use cerave healing ointment when it gets really bad like this (aquaphor or vaseline may work too)

Yes, your reactions look similar to the ones I would get on my arms!

Try to rinse your hands/arms off with regular water as soon as you can after sticking your arms in sani. If you're doing dishes, try to use gloves.

Basically try to limit the sanitiser's contact with your bare skin as much as possible. It will take some time for this flare up to go down, but the more you avoid leaving it on your skin, the less likely you'll be to break out again
