Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

tone deaf customers/ manager on holidays - i expected it but weirdly i’m still surprised (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by insanitysgrip
don’t get me wrong, i volunteered to work as i can’t pass up the holiday pay (i’m so broke 😫) .

i’ve worked at another, very small, coffee shop during christmas before and i’ve worked in the food industry over christmas day etc. but something about working at starbucks during christmas feels…off?

we have been slammed all day, never a moment where there’s no mobiles or a line in the cafe. SM keeps trying to cut labour and send people home early (ironically he’s not even here today as he took today off). he wrote up a partner for not being available today even though when the partner got hired two months ago they specifically stated they couldn’t work christmas and our SM originally told him that was fine. the partner got scheduled for today even though his only non available day was christmas. he still showed up and worked, bless him, but our SM is still planning to write him up for trying to call out? it makes no sense.

we have still been getting very angry/impatient customers all day mixed in with the customers that tell us it’s sad we have to work on christmas. i just kinda smile and shrug every time they say that, because i volunteered so that’s on me, but i wish people would be a little more patient while we are slammed. i don’t really understand telling us that it’s sad we have to work today but then yelling at us five minutes later because their 5 drinks aren’t ready yet

excited to close early today! got here at 9am and i’m the closer tonight. that pay check tho

i'd talk to your dm. especially considering christmas is voluntary, they shouldn't have been scheduled or expected to work unless they asked for a shift that day.

yeah i think i’m gonna tell the partner it happened to about speaking to the DM. he’s very sweet, he’s only been here two months but he’s picked up everything super fast and he’s come in early/ extended shifts every single time our SM has asked him to without complaining. he’s never called out and he told our SM before he was even hired that he can’t work Christmas for religious reasons as he goes to mass. our SM still scheduled him and is now writing him up 🫠 it’s so ridiculous

Honestly if the DM doesn't take it seriously you might even be able to call it religious discrimination and get hr involved

that’s honestly what i told that partner. i’m really big on protecting oneself, especially when it comes down to corporations. he specifically told our SM before he was hired that he attends Mass on christmas day and he could not work the 25th for religious reasons (it’s on his application as “religious reasons”) and our SM still scheduled him.

i’m encouraging this partner to stand firm and highlight that he was hired contingent on his availability citing religious reasons. i’m so mad our SM is trying to write him up for his availability. he didn’t even call out on Christmas day. he came and worked even though it meant having to miss Mass, which his mother was very, very upset about. but our SM is still trying to write him up for “trying” to call out. wtf? i don’t even understand how that’s viable, considering that we have had several partners try to abuse COVID pay this last month (we are in CA so COVID pay was active until the 17th dec.)

i’m so mad. one of our SSVs had a meeting with our DM yesterday about our SM. our DM was very concerned and scheduled another meeting in order to get to the bottom of everything

yeah writing someone up for just attempting to call out is fucking insane, there is literally no ground to stand on for that

-Sorry you have to work on Christmas.

-You being here is why, so you aren’t THAT sorry.
