getting better at doing register, dtr/dto (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by m_bunnie
i have my first shift tomorrow at my store after having a few training sessions at another store. i assume since i’m new they’ll put me at register up front or doing dtr or dto. register scares me because there are soooo many buttons and different screens and customizations and it can get so overwhelming trying to find which buttons to press. especially when the customer is reading their order off so fast. during training, sometimes it would take me so long to ring up a drink and you could tell the customer was getting annoyed. please help i have a lot of anxiety for tomorrow about everything.

i’m also nervous because i’m moving to a new store and i don’t wanna make my coworkers annoyed because i’m new. i don’t wanna be in the way.

Practice is everything, it’s extremely overwhelming and difficult to learn all the buttons during your first week, for reference I started early November and for my whole first week I needed constant support finding buttons etc. During week 2-3 there’s almost like a snap/click that goes on. You learn how to make most drinks that aren’t heavily modified, and your brain kinda autopilots the buttons while you are internally focusing on the customers order. You will also notice that the more practice you get, it seems like the customers slow down if that makes sense and you will start to love when they tell you exactly what they want without having to ask “is that all?” After every drink/pause. Anyways you got this, remember you are human and everyone makes mistakes, and it’s just coffee!

Don't be afraid to tell customers that you're new and ask for some time to find the buttons. It's also totally fine to ask someone else where a button is. None of your coworkers should expect you to know everything already; it takes months to learn everything.

Getting put on a register immediately isn't a given. On my first shift after training I was first told to do dishes while wearing a headset to get used to wearing it and listen to our DTO take orders. I wasn't put on DTO at all for a few days.

Don't feel discouraged by being slow on register at first either. It honestly took me longer to become comfortable on DTO than on bar. If your SSVs are competent they'll be listening while you take orders so they can help you if needed.
