Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

submitted by AshMoony
I caught a shift buying drugs at the handoff counter and reported them to the SM. Through them I filed an incident report. The SM took it seriously, but now they’ve been replaced. I have just found out from a shift that they think it’s all made up. No one in my store knows who filed the report since the SM is gone now and they don’t know who it was filed about.
What would you do about this?
Background on me: I have studied criminal Justice for years.

Studied Criminal Justice for years. Consults reddit in what to do about the situation.
Epona_02 136 points 6m ago
“studied criminal justice” -> watches true crime youtubers
Crazykeyz 245 points 6m ago
Heavy on the mind your business lbssss we don’t get paid enough to care
YungUglyUziGod 229 points 6m ago
Damn go work in criminal justice then if you wanna help ruin someone’s life and make shit harder.
Jew_3 132 points 6m ago
Or, I dunno, don’t buy drugs at work… inside… at the handoff counter.
horriblyIndecisive 73 points 6m ago
Exactly. Why on the inside? Go outside on your ten or something

Don't assume nothing has been done about your report. PRO team moves in mysterious ways, and don't assume the DM and SM are not aware. You did your part and reported the incident. Let it go, unless it happens again.
guachummus 162 points 6m ago
Mind your business? And who cares if you studied criminal justice? 🤣
Midieval 87 points 6m ago
yeah pretty sure if you see a shift buy a bag of coke at the starbucks front counter, your criminal justice background isn't a game changer
unforg1veable 134 points 6m ago
And that’s on mind your business
canidieyet_ 94 points 6m ago
im glad y’all are fine with working at a store where people are buying pills at handoff. i personally wouldn’t be letting that shit slide
Fresh-Brilliant-439 57 points 6m ago
Me like idc but just don’t do it on the clock
AshMoony [OP] 36 points 6m ago
Seriously! That’s the part that floored me. Idgaf if they’re high as a kite off the clock, but don’t bring it to work.
serialsquisher 48 points 6m ago
mind your business, you’re baristas, not congressmen. you need to find another job.
mr305mr_mrworldwide 28 points 6m ago
lol they need to find another job because they don't want drug deals going on in their store 😭
PointEither2673 -11 points 6m ago
I think its more just mind your business. sounds like no one is harming anyone. If you wanted to take such a hard stance on drugs at your store maybe sit in the bathroom the whole day and watch all the people do drugs everyday.
vineanddandy 43 points 6m ago
I don’t understand.. are drugs still being dealt at the store? Was the incident covered up?
AshMoony [OP] -51 points 6m ago
It’s never been addressed again. Nothing came of the report.
vineanddandy 24 points 6m ago
The person buying drugs wasn’t fired?

I’ve seen whole crews fired for stuff like this because everyone got implicated. Just food for thought. It’s up to you whether you get more involved and escalate to upper management, ignore it, or find another job.m

Edit: ok after rubbing two brains cells together I can confidently say I think you should leave immediately if you feel unsafe. But if you keep talking you run the risk of getting involved with an active investigation or dealer vendetta and whatever consequences come along with fucking around in potentially very messy business.
AshMoony [OP] -83 points 6m ago
I’m seeking other employment. This happened the week I did my second round interview with a local police department. The SM told me it was a fire-able offense, that’s why I’m confused. It brought in a super shady guy and we’re in a little downtown location, we don’t have usual crime instances.
long-pit 170 points 6m ago
>I did my second round interview with a local police department

suddenly all the pieces are fitting together
polarizedspaghetti 40 points 6m ago
Idk y’all I don’t wanna work with people who do/buy/sell drugs on the clock? That puts me in danger? No thanks.
BatWeary 22 points 6m ago
I’m actually floored at the amount of people in the comments saying to “mind your business”. Like first of all, OP mentioned in a comment that it wasn’t weed (and even if it were that still isn’t cool), but pills. Regardless of how close you are with someone, if they’re involved with drugs of any kind, you don’t know who else they’re around. I grew up seeing what “it’s just weed/pills/etc get over yourself” will do to people. Genuinely, I would not feel safe at work if knew drugs were being passed off at handoff like that.
noahaiken -16 points 6m ago
Puts you in danger? How?
Jew_3 -5 points 6m ago
I’ve heard tell that when a drug deal goes bad, the dealer tends to sing Kumbaya around the campfire at with you until it’s all worked out. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a drug deal ending in a shooting.

Edit: spelling
noahaiken 10 points 6m ago
Yeah if your dealing with big weight, it can end in shootings. I highly doubt a drug deal small enough to go over the counter is going to end in a shooting.

Fresh-Brilliant-439 39 points 6m ago
Not most ppl on here bein druggies😭
Fresh-Brilliant-439 17 points 6m ago
But also me personally do it outside work not on the clock. 💀
iStealSharpies 5 points 6m ago
Honestly 😂😂😂 Being on the clock would kill the high
streetratroadie 6 points 6m ago
Welcome to the service industry. I wanna say chef Ramsey has a statistic somewhere about this lol
honey_bay 39 points 6m ago
oh well
urlessies 27 points 6m ago
why are people telling you to mind your business… they’re literally buying pills at the register. do y’all really not see ANY red flags with that? come on now
AdNo1495 12 points 6m ago
Exactly

This is your place of employment and half of your coworkers end up being minors too,,, it doesnt look good on anyone

Now if this was off the clock Id mind my business but I dont understand why people are upset that OP snitched
DisciplineLeather127 27 points 6m ago
I’m dying at the “I have studied criminal justice for years” then bring the criminal to justice op!!!! What are we gonna tell you that a scholar like you wouldn’t know??
Iamdecaptainnoww 21 points 6m ago
Don’t ever work in the serving/restaurant industry babe…you won’t be able to handle it.
romanianhopscotch 7 points 6m ago
Lol OK that’s exactly what I was going to say!! Don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. Everyone in that industry drinks/does drugs all the time and people don’t bat an eye. It’s not like it’s healthy or I’m condoning it, but no one’s gonna tattle on anyone unless it becomes a big issue.
Iamdecaptainnoww 3 points 6m ago
Exactly! When service workers are treated as commodities/machines it forces a lot of people to develop unhealthy ways of keeping up with the pace while also not burning out. It’s super duper common in high volume restaurants, bars and kitchen/line cooks especially.

Obviously a coworker shouldn’t be *blatantly* buying/consuming illicit substances. But it is INCREDIBLY common, and an issue that will only get more severe without proper work environments for service employees.
Iamdecaptainnoww 2 points 6m ago
Classic case of blame the corporation, not the employee! Unless you are operating heavy machinery that can hurt someone…mind your own. Everyone is just trying to get through the day however they can.
noccybutter 11 points 6m ago
I went through this at another job.

I tried to report it to my GM and I almost got in trouble for it. The one thing that stuck with me is what she said, “if it was so serious, why didn’t you call the police?”

She was being shitty with me, and I didn’t realize it. So when I replied if I would have done that they would’ve closed the place down potentially and she rolled her eyes, it just clicked with me that she really REALLY didn’t care. So I told her if I ever saw it again I would call the cops. And she fired the employee the next day.

At the time, I was young, naive, and had too much faith in the system.

Now, I would just do what she told me to do. It sucks, the cops are gonna come and request to pull video and take statements. But retaliation is against starbbies policy, so make sure you self document.
BeardiesRule112 11 points 6m ago
Is it weed?
Affectionate_Guava71 17 points 6m ago
probably, though with the budget cuts I’m sure op doesn’t care what drug it is haha
BeardiesRule112 10 points 6m ago
If it’s weed… OP ain’t right
AshMoony [OP] 25 points 6m ago
Pills.
Eta- weed is legal in my state
Jew_3 12 points 6m ago
Which would still be illegal as a handoff counter transaction.
testingaurora -4 points 6m ago
Are you sure it’s not therapeutic pills that the person can’t afford from the pharmacy or something? I know people that have literally bought Zoloft on the street because they didn’t have insurance to be able to afford it. There’s more than one explanation.
ValueAffectionate287 8 points 6m ago
Who’s to say it wasn’t a prescription of theirs someone brought to them and they paid them gas money? I’ve had to have my mom bring my pills, once in a bottle, once it wasn’t so i could take them immediately (although i did get permission and i went to her car for that one).

But also, why are you that pressed that you made a post?
I was understanding on your POV and I get it, there’s minors that work there. But honestly? You lost me when you mentioned your “background,” because now your post makes you sound like a pretentious snob, no one cares that you studied criminal Justice, that was irrelevant.
Personally if it’s not putting me in direct danger, i dont get paid enough to say anything. And idk what that person is going through. Life’s hard and while i Definitely think they should’ve done it off the clock and not at work, I’m not involving myself in someone’s business though.
I don’t jump to conclusions about my coworkers though. There also seems to be some context missing.

This is a great instance in which asking if this person was okay and if they needed someone to step into their position for a min so they could take care of something personal real quick. Also checking on people to see if they’re okay in general would’ve been an acceptable response.
There was no need to actually make the post in the verbiage you did though.
DeepFriedJoseph 6 points 6m ago
While I do agree he should take his business elsewhere, it’s not professional, it seems like your going above and beyond for no reason. Sometimes it takes a while for the higher ups to start actually investigating. No one is really gonna see you as a hero, your a barista, not a hall monitor.
mondrianna 6 points 6m ago
We deal drugs at the handoff counter too. Sugar and caffeine. Literally no difference in my mind.
pinkingtion 6 points 6m ago
Could you reach out to your old SM somehow? perhaps a phone call to your new SM would straighten it out. you could even ask them to leave your name out.

this sounds so nerve-racking. i hope you get this sorted asap.
No_Ad_349 5 points 6m ago
Yeah wow, not minding your business is a bad look.
1ndieJesus 5 points 6m ago
what would i do? probably mind my own business and not snitch on my coworkers and make their life unnecessarily difficult. but that's just me
MakeLulzNotWar 5 points 6m ago
🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓
deathbeforedecaf1984 4 points 6m ago
I’d let partner relations know. If your SM took it seriously then your DM probably knows. So just go higher up the food chain

I would call prsc and open a case about it. They would have access to the incident reports and can pull footage as necessary
ClothingBasket -7 points 6m ago
Okay but fr I don’t think I would report this, until it gets annoying. Like do your shit outside of work? Idk there’s kids around. If a customer saw that it would put us all in danger. Right?

Just my thoughts and it is my business. They decided to do this in place were my money is involved. And I simply wouldn’t be comfortable working with that person.
