Starbucks Baristas: The daily grind

7 cases of frozen breakfast sandwiches left at room temp because we only have one freezer. Messaging to get our orders lowered doesn't work, they send too much anyway. We don't have space for another freezer and they've pushed back our remodel 3 times. DM says just trust the automated orders. RIP. (i.redd.it)

oh wow this is so frustrating, not to mention a huge waste of food😭
laughingashley 21 points 6m ago
Yeah, I know we can't donate *expired* food to shelters, but this?
whatcakepopsdouhave 57 points 6m ago
I don't get why they leave out sandwiches and not pastries. Pastries can be used, sandwiches have to be thrown away, it's so frustrating :(
HarleySpicedLatte 12 points 6m ago
Our delivery ppl have taken to leaving out pastries and not sammies.

Tell you SM or shifts to open what’s called an Ad Hoc count on days you don’t have normal counts (for my store, that would be days other then Wednesday and Sunday). This will give the algorithm used more data of your store’s usage and thus more accurate AOs.
chaosdsl [OP] 29 points 6m ago
We do that. My SM has also been in contact with EHD multiple times. The answer is always "trust the system." 😑😑😑
chaosdsl [OP] 21 points 6m ago
Don't know why this is getting downvoted. 🙄 We are basically 100% on counts (we've probably missed less than 5 since AO started over a year ago) and we do adhocs. We still get a ridiculous amount of food. But go ahead and downvote me.

Ask your SM to post on Workplace in a group related to Inventory and Food. Someone from corporate will likely be able to reach out to your manager and work with them directly to hopefully reach a solution on this issue. My store went through this awhile ago. We’re a high volume store for our area and 3.5 deliveries/week and the amount of space we had wasn’t enough to support the amount of food we sold. We have since gone to 5 deliveries/week and it has helped reduce our waste and the amount of food being left out by delivery drivers, it almost never happens now! I know how incredibly frustrating this can be but I kept pressing my manager about it we eventually worked it out. Good luck!
bigdog510 5 points 6m ago
Essentially that is the answer. More counts = more data for the algorithm = more accurate AOs
Dietdoctorgender 1 points 6m ago
Is that the same thing as a variance count? We were having this problem, but when we got our new manager he said the problem is that we weren’t keeping up with the variance counts. Basically if you miss a count, then the system thinks you’re out of whatever it is that you didn’t count and will send you a lot of it.
bigdog510 1 points 6m ago
So high variance counts are counts that will generate automatically if the computer generated number has a significant difference from the count number. I work with statistics a lot and it’s based on a certain percentage of difference or error which depends on the company. Tell yours SM and shifts to make sure EVERYTHING is counted and to open AdHocs more if there is high waste, these give data to the algorithm which yields more accurate AO to your store’s actual usage.

Such a goddamn waste. And of course you can’t donate the food because… why?? I forget the excuse they used to give me. Prob liability. Donating food instead of wasting it would just make too much sense.
zewave_ 7 points 6m ago
I mean donating food that had been sitting out for hours when it has meat isnt something you should be donating haha. Could literally kill someone if it was left out long enough. Still I agree it’s sad how wasteful it is!
testingaurora 5 points 6m ago
No of course not donating what’s in this post or anything that isn’t safe. I was just remembering literally boxes of pastries that they made us throw out AND THEN lock the dumpster!?! Like anyone that’s willing to get into the dumpster and look for something fresh enough to eat shouldn’t be locked out. It’s just madness
Necessary_Low939 7 points 6m ago
Meanwhile we have no sandwiches 😀..
chaosdsl [OP] 8 points 6m ago
Oh yeah, it's really fun to have no bacon gouda for a week and then get 3 cases delivered to the floor outside of the freezer. 😂
Necessary_Low939 5 points 6m ago
Ah starbucks. I like it when we ran out of lemonade, strawberry açaí etc SO I DONT HAVE TO MAKE TEN MILLION REFRESHERS FFS

One time we ran out of heavy cream for three days and it was heaven 🙏🏻
iiiimagery 4 points 6m ago
Why not give it to other starbucks in the area instead it throw it out?
chaosdsl [OP] 24 points 6m ago
It was delivered overnight at room temperature. These were sitting out for hours before we opened.
iiiimagery 2 points 6m ago
Gotcha. Didn't read the entire title correctly makes sense
chaosdsl [OP] 2 points 6m ago
You're good, haha.
Scared-Ad-7678 12 points 6m ago
HUGE health violation, frozen meats sitting at room temp for several hours should never be served the public
iiiimagery 2 points 6m ago
Yup ik I just didn't fully read the title !
FruitPoopLoops 3 points 6m ago
Lol lets spend money to raise and slaughter farm animals to throw their processed corpses into the trash
maceace101 3 points 6m ago
Hahaha! My store had this for MONTHS!!!! It was horrendous the amount of food we threw away
bigheftyhooker 2 points 6m ago
They’d be so much more profitable if anyone knew how to run a company and stop blaming labor for everything
Brolicbarista 1 points 6m ago
My store has had the same problem last couple weeks. Lucky for us we receive delivery while we’re on shift so we are able to pull extra pastry to make room. The problem is the variety of menu items this time of year. So many damn cake pops and cookies and the lime bars that for some fucking reason are still on the menu …. it all takes up too much space.

If you have extra food that’s still in temp call your local shelter, fire dept, public school .. somebody will take it
PluralPaul 1 points 6m ago
How many fridges y'all have? You could "emergency pull" as many of those extra boxes as you can and shove them immediately as is into gaps in the fridges so they can be used/donated.
I'm also trying to remember what options there are in IMS besides "damaged" when marking out stuff from the orders, as I don't know if that would help or make the problem worse. Good luck, regardless.
IfuDidntCome2Party 1 points 6m ago
And some partners here worry to death about never giving an extra shot of syrup, sprinkles or whatever, for free, to protect the companies interests at all times. As if Corp is really concerned about that extra oz of coffee topping.
acertwo 1 points 6m ago
Meanwhile we’re out of everything by 1 PM… Hows that automated ordering working out for you now Starbucks?
EmbarassedMilk3 1 points 6m ago
jesus.. thats so much waste... and i know this sounds stupid, but i would lowkey take a box home. i mean watching the clock waiting for the minute it cant be sold and just... oh no where'd it goooo...
nanobyte55 1 points 6m ago
It's not an ideal resolution, but when I know these issues are happening at myvstore, I check to see what is incoming and rearrange the freezer to make as much space as possible. Sometimes it means pulling extra food or awkwardly amalgamating boxes. It sucks, but it helps
k-stoner 1 points 6m ago
having the same issue with our pastries! 20 boxes left out of the freezer the other day🤯my head felt like it was gonna explode
xthefabledfox 1 points 6m ago
This was my store until they remodeled us finally. I feel your pain. Having to adjust the orders every time, plus take that shit to the garbage and enter pastries into the iPod as an emergency pull, AND date them, AND put away the rest of the order, AND place the order…. Exhausting…. And the DCR would have one hour off the floor time for all that lmfaoo. So sorry OP

What about an additional freezer?
chaosdsl [OP] 6 points 6m ago
Absolutely no space right now. We have one freezer and two fridges. There physically isn't space in any of our three tiny backrooms for one. The remodel will take part of our cafe for more storage/backroom space, but it's not happening until the summer now, if it doesn't get postponed again. 😭😭😭
