can someone explain the reasoning behind the labor cuts right now?(self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by R1P2MYOUTH
obviously all of us are seeing the effects of this, but idk the reason for it (or if there even is one) i've seen some people say janurary is tough, is this ever gonna get better😅 i've been with the bux for years but don't ever remember it hitting this hard

Maintaining those record profits. I'd imagine they're particularly concerned with expanding/maintaining their war chest in case a recession is coming. All our high-margin products are fairly demand elastic, so an economic downturn would hit hard.
iiiimagery45 points6m ago
Can you say this in ultra dumb?
bitexualthespian82 points6m ago
War chest = the money a company keeps on hand for difficult times/quick expansion
High-margin = low cost to make, but high sale price (think frappuccinos, cold foam, etc)
Elastic demand = this can mean a few things, but in this case I mean that Starbucks beverages are generally considered a luxury and are one of the first things that people will cut out of their budget when times get hard
And just in case, a recession is (very) basically when there's less money moving through the economy for some reason

Thank you i understand now 🫡 appreciate u fr
absolutefoo16 points6m ago
u a real one for this comment
edit: to add on^ my anxiety legit entered the chat cause i was like fuck i’m never gonna find out what’s happening 😂
iiiimagery11 points6m ago
Lmao sometimes I'm just so curious I gotta ask 😭😭🫡
bitexualthespian3 points6m ago
Just gonna throw out there, if you're not sure what something means and you're too anxious to ask, just put the words you're not sure about + definition into Google!
For example, if you put "war chest definition" into Google, an explanation pretty similar to mine comes up, same for the other ones! ☺️

Is there ever a reason for anything corporations do other than profit?
Bazzock04132 points6m ago
This is the answer. DM’s went around a month ago in preparation for the cuts, outright saying this is to preserve value for shareholders.
nicolelynnejones49 points6m ago
I’ve never seen such intense labor cuts during the Holidays. We had a 3 person floor today, that went down to 2 after the last opener left. On one of the busiest days of the year. We’re in a shopping center and the day after Christmas is the mass returns day. Nothing was able to be continuously restocked because we needed 2 bars all day. Halves were near impossible.
waitlike15 points6m ago
literally my exact shift. so pathetic of the company rn tbh
Ordinary-Theory-828912 points6m ago
Like I understand that after the holidays it typically gets very slow. But why didn’t they wait until after the holidays to start these labor cuts, instead of slashing hours during probably the busiest week of the year.
AJ22884226 points6m ago
Because Starbucks wants to make money and managers and baristas will continue to push themselves to run smoothly with less hours which just shows the company that you can run with less hours and they won’t give you more

GREED
R1P2MYOUTH [OP]6 points6m ago
easiest way to explain it
ashaustad19 points6m ago
Because the current mode of production is capitalist production. Which thrives off the exploitation of the working class and values endless profits over paying workers. Company profits = unpaid wages to workers.
Necessary_Low93912 points6m ago
If anyone who gets under 12 hours and is greatly affected, you should speak up. Because they established this policy in the summer to protect the partners benefits.
For example, in January I only get 4 hrs but that’s ok for me. I’m just there for certain benefits since I have another job. But it’s not right for those who depend on this job.
R1P2MYOUTH [OP]6 points6m ago
fr🙃 really hoping this is temporary, 3-4 person plays during peak are basically impossible ugh
Necessary_Low9393 points6m ago
It’s like slave work
clokura1 points6m ago
Is this a US thing? I know someone at my store recently lost their benefits due to the labour cuts.
Necessary_Low9391 points6m ago
It seems like it. Honestly this has only been in recent years. I first started working at sb around 10 years ago and always had 24-32 hrs all year long. Back then, shifts were all 8 hrs. It’s crazy what they be doing now.
skylikeslemonade9 points6m ago
on top of all of this, the weekly update in canada detailed them raising stars to redeem stuff LMAO they rlly be fucking with every economy even their own 🤪
skylikeslemonade6 points6m ago
it’s now 200 stars to get a latte instead of 150 like bruh
TheBoringAlpaca4 points6m ago
That was for the US too :/

Greed. It really sucks rn when I’m busting my ass tryna pick up extra hours cos I can’t accept a week with less than 35 punched hours 😭 got car repairs, a trip of a lifetime to Japan coming up and I’ll be gone for 11 days (thankfully with enough PTO) but still gotta make rent. 😞 it’s so much
I hope we’ll all be okay soon.
nynequbes6 points6m ago
I was told they’re gonna try and blame it on diesel fuel prices and that maintaining the supply chain is of higher importance than letting us work decent hours.
rfpetrie5 points6m ago
Anyone else looking for second/alt job?? 😅😅 this got me trippin.. how am I to afford these rising prices with like 16hrs?
SovietRaptor3 points6m ago
Unionize.
Stunkydunk3 points6m ago
My assumption is that, because they were sooooooooo generous and gave us pay raises about a decade too late, some of the useless corporate starbots aren’t going to get the yearly bonuses we always earn them unless they work us to death maintaining their profit margins.
GhostfaceJK3 points6m ago
other than profit for the company, january is generally just a dead month

LifeIs_Ugh1 points6m ago
I literally went from 30 hrs to 16😭
StatusFudge73262 points6m ago
I went from 19 to literally 9 it’s unbelievable
AAA_Morningstar1 points6m ago
Try having hours cut even more because you and two other stores have partners from a 4th one which had construction halted for a few months
Ok_Lemon_71591 points6m ago
I’ve worked for Starbucks for 3 years the first year there were labor cuts as usual in January but not in the holiday season? My second year was recovering from Covid but still not as bad labor cuts. This year is way more intense labor cuts; I’ve never seen cuts during the holiday season like this. The last two weeks we’ve had no support scheduled all day and when asking my SM I’m told it’s because another store in the district is going over.
lewabwee1 points6m ago
They do like to cut labor but this is always the time of year they slash it
dfarner1 points6m ago
The company gave away too much money during Covid and are trying to recoup it now.
Luxia_Knight-2 points6m ago
It’s because we are making significantly less money and people are ordering less. When a person orders we get a specific amount of time for each item them buy. Even bleeding something adds more labor. This time of year there are less people and less sales so thus the stores earn less labor. It’s not cutting labor just for money sake (if we are over on labor the store also looses money because the store pays each partner not starbucks). Please lmk if this makes sense!!
