Working at another store questions (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by ThatArtBitch2020
So my store is closed rn due to weather and I’m picking up a shift at another store for the first time. Any advice for working at another store for the first time or is it prob about the same?

It’ll be a bit to take in as things are in different locations but it’s still a Starbucks. You make drinks, serve customers, take orders, etc. Try to socialize with the partners there if you don’t like awkward silence. Don’t worry about asking where items are as you shouldn’t be expected to know their layout. Have fun and good luck! A change of scenery is almost always nice.

It can be weird and you might feel less effective than usual. That said, I’ve taken shifts at every store in my immediate area and one thing I’ll say is in all the situations I’ve done it, expectations of you are usually reduced and if you’re coverage, shifts will probably let you do the position you want because they don’t know you and are just happy you’re there. CS is really hard at a new store bc you don’t know where anything is. So if you’re asked what you want to do, I’d pick something like bar/drive/warming where you’ll be on one station where it’s easier to figure out the layout.

I actually borrowed as a shift literally my last shift and that’s a whole thing since you’re trying to work with the strengths/weaknesses of your baristas and obviously I don’t know them! So it’s really helpful if you can communicate honestly about like, I’m good at X, not so good at Y

Gotcha. This is really good advice thank you!

But basically, try to strike a balance between being chill and communicating if there are times when you don’t know what’s happening or where to look for something. People aren’t always aware of idiosyncrasies their store has so if something is confusing or making you feel like you suck, ask for help! Any nice person should be fine with you needing help bc nobody can expect you to magically know everything in the store on your first day there.
