Last week I called out because of a really bad migraine and the morning shiftlead told me that migraines arent covered under calling out sick and told me my manager would speak to me. Not only that, but I also heard from another barista that the same shiftlead said something like ‘we cut her hours and she’s still calling off’. honestly it kind of hurt my feelings because yes i’m not going to lie, i did call out often because i was and still am struggling a lot with my mental health, but i hadn’t called out in over a month until last week, as well as i always use my sick hours for call outs. i’m hoping to talk to my manager soon about wanting more hours because i’m in a hard financial situation, but if it’s the case where my hours are being cut because of my call outs, i’m not sure what to do.

Migraines are a reason to call out. Next time just say you’re sick. Working with a migraine is miserable. Especially if you’re on DT or POS.

In the eyes of a manager, no matter the reason, calling out usually means you dont want to work. So yes, if you call out enough, they’ll stop investing time into your schedule if they don’t think you’re reliable to show up. That being said, have a 1-1 convo with your manager explaining your side. It may not help with the hours, but at least your manager will know what’s up and won’t think you’re just trying to skimp out on shifts. Maybe ask if there are any shifts to cover and take initiative to come in to those.

I also called out for a Migraine last week… strange little world… My manager and SSV both told me to go home 20 minutes into my shift. I got to work and tried to tough it out and could not function. It’s completely valid and absolutely is covered under calling out sick. Your shift lead is just playing dirty and being a bad leader.

I am completely dysfunctional when I have a migraine, my vision is impacted with auras and I can’t smell anything good related or I will throw up. If you are sick (doesn’t matter if it’s a cold or a migraine or whatever) you’re sick, they should not be holding it against you or telling you it’s not valid, something is up.

Is your shift lead also a health care professional? Amazing.

Every store has the total amount of hours they can schedule each day cut in December/January. So the amount of hours your sm can schedule people is lower than it has been to begin with. If everyone wants hours and your sm expects that you’re gonna call out more often (especially if your sm doesn’t know why) they might prioritize the people who are showing up every day to make things easier on the store.

That’s not to be judgmental of you. It’s just starbucks only allows for skeleton crews and a call out where they have to scramble for coverage or do without can be kinda devastating, especially if you don’t have enough people to begin with.

I know you didn’t call out in December until now. I don’t know if you’ll call out in January. You should speak to your manager. However, the cut hours are just kinda a thing at starbucks this time of year. I don’t think one barista who needs money should be prioritized over another barista who needs money but if they don’t feel like you’re reliable you really probably wont be prioritized and it’s not even (necessarily) on your manager. It’s the company. It’ll get better again over the next few months but if you can’t wait you might want to start thinking about something else.

Chronic migraines are considered a neurological disorder and are considered a disability if you have more than 10 migraine days a month.

They are absolutely a valid reason to call out, and a manager cutting your hours or reprehending you for it is illegal.

Your shift has no authority to tell you whether or not you can call out, let alone anything regarding your hours being cut (everyone’s hours are being cut due to corporate pinching pennies.) Have an honest conversation with your sm about your hours and mention your shift’s comments. Most managers wouldn’t like a shift acting the way yours is.

I can’t walk or drive when I have a migraine. I WILL puke if I attempt to get up. I wish they would tell me I’m not sick. I would make someone drive me so I can vomit all over the floor for them.
Puzzleheaded_You2601 1 points 6m ago
This^ if there so confident that they know how I feel more than me I’ll gladly show up to work just to vomit and make a scene.
Puzzleheaded_Lie706 3 points 6m ago
You don’t have to disclose why you are calling out FYI. That’s BS, and a Migraine absolutely is
shitpost444 3 points 6m ago
my migraines mimic stroke symptoms, so that’s absolutely being sick, and often with migraines (at least for me) you can’t see and you’re puking. def tell your manager what’s going on with the shift lead talking shit about you because they’re not allowed to say anything about you calling out if you use sick time

You might qualify for intermittent FMLA for both mental health and migraines—this would protect you from punishment/write ups related to call-outs. I don’t know the process for getting this documented and approved at Sbux, but it’s something to look into if you’re working with MDs for these conditions.

why is a shift saying “we” cut her hours? i hate when people are so brainwashed by this company they cause drama within the store itself! like everyone in the store is supposed to be supportive of each other. the higher ups are cutting your hours, not this stupid shift lead. they need to be more compassionate because if they got really sick or weren’t feeling good i bet they wouldn’t want to be treated like that.

i used to hate some of my old shift leads, but at least when i called out for the small things like my stomach hurting or me coughing i got wishes that i felt better and that i deserved rest. i can’t believe people are so foul hearted that they can start drama like that so quickly. it’s never that deep

It’s January and it’s generally a hard season for hours for some reason? But people calling out in most managers eyes means you don’t want to be working. Honestly a tip from someone who also gets migraines is saying your having one and your puking with it. Migraines are so painful they are causing you to puke ok? If you puke they can’t sass you or shit ok? Even if you know your not sick (we had a pregnant parent who puked the night before from morning sickness and they were still not allowed to come in as it could also be food poisoning and other illnesses that could spread to customers). Or say diarrhea. That’s a for sure way to get people to leave you alone ok?

Stop calling out if you want more hours.
reipothos 3 points 6m ago
ah yes because working with a migrane is *totally* doable and safe.
