Was Christmas supposed to be volunteer based this year?(self.starbucksbaristas)

I’m getting lots of conflicting information from people in my store and I need to know if I have a problem with my SM or not 😀

yes i believe it’s always supposed to be volunteer based

Christmas is volunteer only. The district should be asked to sign up for available shifts at the open store. Tips for the day are kept separate and divided between those who worked that day only.

it depends. last year our store did not volunteer nor did we have anyone sign up to work christmas (apparently it was my DM's decision) so my SM just filled out the schedule based on availability (a lot of minors were on for christmas day who were all unhappy about it). i complained directly to partner resources and they told me it wasn't against any policy.
we were supposed to have a different store open for christmas this year, but supposedly not enough people could work christmas so they ended up staying closed. nobody from nearby stores volunteered.

Ohh ok so it’s to the discretion of the district? Ours was whoever was scheduled and only four people that requested off could use PTO on Christmas Eve/day. if it were actually strictly volunteer based I would be a little upset, this wouldn’t be the first time my SM has purposefully withheld info from her baristas

honestly my last SM was the same way, but when I called partner resources about it, they basically just told me too bad (even with the minors working involuntarily), so i gave up fighting it. but yeah it seems like its up to the discretion of the district.

Every shift is volunteer based if you have balls

At my store, it was volunteer based, unless they didn’t get enough volunteers, then it would be availability based
marigshu3 points6m ago
It’s discretionary. Not policy. If your district wants to remain open — you remain open.

My manager told me that the holidays are volunteer only and if you don't volunteer, you won't work over the holidays. But I'm not sure about other stores.
Itsmerightme2 points6m ago
Did you sign up for it? Did you still have a sign-up sheet? If yes, then it’s volunteer.

Its the one day of the year that is volunteer only.
Nalin901 points6m ago
It is always volunteer.

When I worked there it was always "volunteer based". I use quotes because we were given the option to sign up, but we were told we had to sign up for at least 3 I think between Thanksgiving, Christmas eve, Christmas day, new years eve, and new years day, making it not feel voluntary at all
Ew_Oxygen11241 points6m ago
Voluntary if you have the staff to make that possible.
ababab891 points6m ago
we had to pick between thanksgiving or christmas, but my SM said we HAD to work one or the other.

Christmas Day is always volunteer based

Just a quick question for info: you’re not at a licensed store, are you? As far as I know, corporate stores are typically only staffed by volunteers on Christmas Day or they don’t open.
Cheedanish [OP]1 points6m ago
We’re a corporate store. Yikes
misslyss2311 points6m ago
Big oof friend. Sounds like a problem with your SM then. Our area typically has one of the DT near the expressways that’s open with volunteer partners only. If they don’t get enough volunteers they don’t open.

When I worked for the siren (mind you, I promoted to customer a few years ago), the district I was in took sign ups. They staffed the DTs and high volume cafe only stores first from that list and the rest of the stores remained closed.

I was told at my store that we were required to work. Christmas and new years. So even though it’s outside of my availability I was scheduled to work both.

I really don’t know where everyone got this idea that it’s voluntary. If you need off, you should have requested it early. I requested off in March because I knew I would be away and I ended up being the only one who actually did so. Stores typically do a sign up sheet so that those who don’t mind working would be scheduled before others, but if not enough people volunteer, then you may be scheduled based off your availability. It’s not some surprise that the store is open on these days
RyusuiJL7 points6m ago
I mean, our SM straight tells us this. Literally that, if we don't have enough volunteers, we don't open.
Cheedanish [OP]5 points6m ago
That makes sense. Our store had no volunteer system at all, and only the first four requests for PTO on either day were taken and no more. At that point it wasn’t even a fallback, just pushing it through and hoping you were one of the four that got the day off, or by some miracle not scheduled. I just wanted to make sure it wasn’t our SM being neglectful, she would do something like force people to work on a voluntary schedule, if that were the case
