I feel bad :( (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by maddieebobaddiee
Today (and all of this week so far, it seems like) has been super short-staffed, and I’m a newbie. I’ve been doing my best, and I’ve had a lot of successes but today just wasn’t a good day, tbh. When I first came in, I was at the drive-thru window (which I LOVE), and then I got placed on the espresso bar for the drive-thru and then the food station. I feel so horrible because I kept on dropping some food with the tongs, and my coworker said that I was fine and I was doing an awesome job, but I still can’t help but feel bad about it. I felt so sad when I got home from work today 😭 My store has been hectic, but it mellows out in the afternoon, so I ask to be at the bar during those hours so I can get a decent amount of practicing in for drinks without the added pressure (for now)! I’ve never worked as a barista/food service before. My background is being a cashier and also being in healthcare. This job 1000% gives me more appreciation for food service workers omg. I went and got a burger after my shift was over, and there were only three workers at the restaurant; I knew EXACTLY how that felt.

Do not feel bad at all we’ve literally all been there and I don’t think anyone would want to be new at this moment in time with the staffing (greed) issues!!

You're doing a great job Maddie! And please don't beat yourself for little mistakes or accidents; they happen to every single one of us. And they'll even reduce in number once you become more comfortable with your positions, trust me 🌸.

aww thank you!! I’m working on New Year’s day and I got a festive top to celebrate 😂 it’s a gold sequin top but I also got a wine colored one so I have options lol
IchirakuVibes 2 points 6m ago
Heck yeah. Wine sounds like it could be the play 👀👀 but I'm sure the fit is gonna be big cute regardless!
New Years and it being a Sunday should allow for a real smooth day and a relaxing shift, perfect time to hop on that bar and have some fun for the day. Practice those holiday drinksss.
I wish I could spend my entire shifts on bar again, I missed those days so much fr 😭

I kinda wanna wear the gold one, it’s sequined all over lol the wine one is just sparkly in the front!

mastering the job takes a while!! so don’t feel bad for making mistakes, honestly after two years with this company (and being a trainer) i still make some mistakes myself. asking questions and chatting w the play caller on where to place you during busy moments would be my suggestion. I’ve grown a lot just by simply communicating and expressing where i’m great at (CS/bar) and where i’m not (DTO)

I love the drive thru stuff, it’s so fun! yeah yesterday when things got busy my shift said “it looks like a good time for a break!!” and when I came back he said I had options and I picked my fav (drive thru window) 🤗

It felt like you took the words right out of my brain since I’m also a new partner. During training I came home and cried after being sent home early for being slow. I feel like being overwhelmed might be universal at the start when you work here…
maddieebobaddiee [OP] 5 points 6m ago
They sent you home early for that? I’m so sorry. I feel like for me it’s so tough because I’ve been through so much more tougher situations and think I should “be better than this” even though I’ve never worked a day in food/drink service before. I’ve really enjoyed working here thus far, the flexibility of hours is awesome! I’m not totally sure how long my training is, nobody has said to me “yay you’re done with training!” but when I look online it says “coverage” instead of “training” so 🤷🏻‍♀️ interesting lol
shirocherry 2 points 6m ago
For me the training was about two weeks but I haven’t had the final conversation with my store manager to finish out the online module. I was given the official pin for completing training though so idk lol ,, the flexibility and shorter shifts is great for me tbh since I had to work grueling long hours when I was in retail
maddieebobaddiee [OP] 1 points 6m ago
yeah I’m taking classes to get my bachelor’s in nursing and the hours seem really good to work while in school! this is my 4th week of being here 🤗 I haven’t gotten a pin or anything yet so idk what’s happening lol. I did all of the online modules my 2nd day

I feel your pain. We were super short staffed today and I must have dropped three orders of egg bites! (Slippery little suckers. Lol). Anyway, just laugh off your mistakes. Take a deep breath and just keep going. Most customers can see when you are short staffed and they’re understanding. Just do your best. Keep up the hard work. 👍😊

one of my coworkers really helped me yesterday and it was so nice 🥺 he’s the calmest person ever which made me feel really calm! this week has been nothing short of overwhelming and I think my coworkers definitely picked up on that I wasn’t feeling the best because of it. they all said hi when I came in yesterday and my shift said to me “it looks like it’s a good time to take a break!!” when things started to get busier. They’ve all been so supportive and nice!

I have my first closing shift on Tuesday, I’ve heard mixed things about those lol. Opening was kinda hard since it was so early in the morning (4:30am) I was sooo sleepy 😴

That desire to improve your craft is something that can’t be trained. I’d rather have a barista that sucks but wants to be better than a barista that’s decent but doesn’t have that drive.

At the end of the day, it’s just bean water. But you should absolutely take pride in what you do! We’ve all been green beans and we understand how you’re feeling and we see your effort!
maddieebobaddiee [OP] 1 points 6m ago
lol bean water 🤣 I like that!!

I'm super new as well, and it gets crazy in the store that I work at. I feel so bad making stupid mistakes but I know that I'm still learning and you're still learning too.
I think you're doing amazing!!:)

don't worry my love!! even as a partner that's been working for the siren for over a year, i make silly mistakes and that's fine bc at the end of the day, it's just coffee ❤️ we appreciate you so much!!
