SSV Educational LOA? (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by bunnyrista
I plan on taking a coding program that starts in a few months. I was initially thinking of taking the part-time one for 32 weeks but I’ve been considering on just getting more $$ for my student loan so I can do the 12 week program and no life it and still pay my rent and bills and finally just be done.

Is it possible to get a leave of absence for 12 weeks for educational purposes as an SSV?

Incase you’re curious; *heres why I’m considering the 12 week with an LOA instead of the 32 week*.
- to be completely honest; I’m absolutely burnt the fuck out and don’t think I could put my attention into something else simultaneously for 36 weeks. All my free time is spent just trying to recover from how horrid every day for the past 6 months has been but even then when I was taking college classes I could only manage 1 or 2 each semester with my hours.
- I could put all of my time/energy into the program and be done in half the amount of time while getting a break from the siren at the same time.
- it takes on average 3-6 months to get a job in the field after completing a program or degree. If it wasn’t for that, I’d just quit but I want to be able to come back as an SSV and have a job until I can get into my field.
- I’m very tired of putting my future off one way/reason or another. I know age doesn’t matter, but I’ll be 27 by the time I complete the 32 week program and find a job and I kind of just want to get out of retail already. Im losing my mind
- I have insurance benefits through work and don’t want to lose that.
- my store already has 1 too many leads anyway.

Honestly at this point and how we’ve been treated this holiday season and being deathly close to just walking out; it’s I either do the 12 week program and get a break or I transfer/find another job and do the 36.

*..and before you tell me to quit because I sound unhappy; can anyone, with 100% of their being, say they truly enjoy working at Starbucks in the conditions it’s in? If that’s the case then half of my store wouldn’t be wanting to quit right now. I used to love working for the Siren even 6 months ago, but right now it’s just a job and not everyone has to like their job.*

I believe education is specifically excluded as a reason for a personal leave of absence. There’s also a limit to how long a person leave of absence can be, and I’m pretty sure it’s less than 12 weeks. Your best bet may be to demote and work less if you want to do a 12 week program, but as you probably know, working at all during a program like that is not recommended.

That being said, the 32 week program may actually end up working out better with the current state of the tech industry and it’s layoffs/downsizing. I can appreciate the pressure you’re feeling, but these programs aren’t a guarantee anyway, so you want to be able to maximize what you do with it. It’ll give you more time to put together a solid portfolio and network, which will be the real key to leveraging the program into a job.

Ahh that’s a good way of looking at it in terms of portfolio and connecting cause I’ll have a longer time to work with my cohort. Okay maybe I’ll consider sticking with my original plan and worst case I’ll just jump ship and work somewhere else while I’m doing the program.
