lol today i asked my male shift supervisor to use the bathroom bc to change my tampon and he told me to hold my period in💀💀💀 (self.starbucksbaristas)

restricting/denying bathroom access is an osha violation iirc
BitchyNordicBarista 91 points 6m ago
I came here to post this! It absolutely is an OSHA violation, I had to remind management of it once at a job outside of Starbucks.
chaoticlesbianism 262 points 6m ago
next time just threaten to pop it out on the floor lmao. (/hj) BUT shifts can’t deny you bathroom breaks. you’re rather telling them why you’re hopping off the floor and pointing out your absence rather than asking for permission imo (from a shift in training)
PetMySquid 7 points 6m ago
Yeah if we’re absolutely slammed I **ask** if they can hold it for just a tad longer to clear up some of the work, but if they need to go I never deny it. Even if I was allowed to say no I still would never do that to someone.
weirdpodcastaunt 21 points 6m ago
Respectfully though, you can’t hold a period, that’s still a different scenario.
rudebii 125 points 6m ago
As a lead, whenever anyone asked to go use the restroom I didn’t need an explanation nor did I ever want one. Just go, take care of your business, do a lobby check on your way back (we’ll hand you a towel at hand off).
Extreme_Piece3922 [OP] 34 points 6m ago
i didn’t explicitly say what i needed to do, but it was urgent for me
rudebii 57 points 6m ago
If anyone “asked” (I never treated it as an ask, more of a heads up) to go use the restroom, I assumed it’s urgent. That’s why I always said “go. Come back ASAP. Do a floor check on your way back.”

As far as I’m concerned, no one has to “ask” or explain why they need to use the restroom. That’s a human dignity thing.
Extreme_Piece3922 [OP] 16 points 6m ago
i agree, it should be seen as a heads up, but we can’t go to the bathroom when its super busy
rudebii 55 points 6m ago
I never saw it that way. If you need to go, you need to go. We’ll survive one down on a bio-break for 3-5 minutes. Plus, if we’re that busy, no one’s down a lobby in a while, so two birds, one stone.

I’ve had lines out the door and around the stores on thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. and I made sure my people got breaks and such. It’s a shit show (so to speak) anyway. I’d rather my people by “battle ready” than pushing them through without comfort breaks. Can’t think penny wise, pound foolish in the trenches. Something bosses never learn.
sammieduck69420 9 points 6m ago
right! i’m not your parent, im happy you’re letting me know where you’re going… but like i can’t and won’t hold you hostage here. go do what you need to do as the adults we both (should be) are
overturned23 76 points 6m ago
Threaten to bleed all over the floor. That’ll make them let you go. Serious talk, shifts cannot deny you use to the bathroom. Just let them know you are stepping off the floor. You’re a grown adult, this is not high school.
Extreme_Piece3922 [OP] 33 points 6m ago
bro it was horrible, i actually did feel like i would bleed everywhere😭
sammieduck69420 12 points 6m ago
as a fellow male i would genuinely like to apologise on his unfortunate behalf and will be shaming him for that disrespectful and inappropriate behaviour.

i’m sorry… who doesn’t know how a period works but knows how to lead the shift at a starbucks. make sure he knows right and the internet shames him. it’s kinda funny how ridiculous the situation was but again, don’t be afraid ti speak up and be like “dude, you should know this by now… are you okay?”

i would be petty and find ways to leave red (bio safe) drops around the store in areas to call him out in my overdone methods
Wonderful-Put-5972 47 points 6m ago
Report him. He cannot do that!
nicolelynnejones 44 points 6m ago
Hmmmm I smell a call to HR and an incident report
grlcbr8th 21 points 6m ago
Don’t ask to go to the bathroom just tell. Maybe ask someone to cover you that’s it.
limeoutlaw 15 points 6m ago
Let your SM know. That’s not okay. At best he could say, “okay, can you wait a minute while I do x so we can cover?” And if you can wait, great! If not, they should have had a plan in place to support flexibility
ClothingBasket 14 points 6m ago
Newbie here. I was literally shitting myself on DTR and begging to go. They told me to hang ten so I did, I actually waited 20 minutes and they still tried holding me there. Fuck that I left actually shitting and running to the bathroom. When I came back he took me off window like lmao whatever.
Extreme_Piece3922 [OP] 14 points 6m ago
seriously, people need to understand that baristas are humans. its not fair to ask us to stop bodily functions just because a store is busy. no one has ever died by waiting for 5 minutes for their caramel macchiato
Chromosomes23 11 points 6m ago
I have partners with ibs I just tell them go when you need just tell me as your leaving I’ll figure out the rest for 5mins lol
sammieduck69420 10 points 6m ago
i can’t remember an age i didn’t know about the menstrual cycle grateful i don’t need to deal with it. and always carrying a variety of pads and pons and advil/ tylenol for friends and guests cuz that’s the least i can do as a fellow human. especially since i don’t need them regularly, i can get the good brands and let friends/ guests take a break from the stupid cost of feminine hygiene and supplying them if need be when otherwise might not be able to. i’m also huge on it literally being a bodily cycle that’s as natural and a human right as breathing is and refuse to let anything involving it be weird or gross or uncomfortable because again, we’re all human here ^except ^corporate, ^they ^can ^go ^work ^in ^the ^conditions ^they’ve ^made ^for ^all ^eternity
Apprehensive-You5261 1 points 6m ago
You’re a awesome friend!! A lot of guys are so grossed out by periods and stuff.
taurusinthesun 6 points 6m ago
report him
freakkinthesheets 5 points 6m ago
My shift does this !!!! I have IBS so from time to time I'm bolting to the "baristas room" and he always goes

S: " what are you doing in there for 20 mins?"

Me : "I have IBS"

S: "what does THAT mean?"

Me: " it stands for I be shitting"

S: "ew that's disgusting"

Me: "it Actually mean irritable bowel syndrome"

S: "why are you telling me this?"

Straight to your manager dm and pcc imo

Jfc in this day in age, when all of Al Gore’s internet exists, how does anyone still not know how basic human anatomy functions??
eemmmiiiilllyyy 3 points 6m ago
Supervisors are bold. I would’ve walked off the floor without another word.
myredditusername919 3 points 6m ago
i would be like (in my mind at least) “dude, you’re an idiot if this isn’t a joke. if you actually think womens periods work that way, have fun being a virgin for the rest of your life. clearly you work this shitty job purely because this is the best job someone as stupid as you could ever have.”

in reality, i would probably say “hey, Im not sure if you’ve ever interacted with a woman like, ever, but it doesn’t work that way and if you’re this unaware of how a woman’s reproductive cycle works I would strongly suggest you watch a 10 minute youtube video on the matter, as you sound REALLY ignorant right now and I dont want you to have to continue to make an ass of yourself in front of women for the rest of your life. anyway, while you do some research im changing my tampon, bye”
rudebii 3 points 6m ago
This is a bigger lens to where the siren is at. Quality shift leads aren’t this. I know, I was a great lead. You need to know how to run a shift and when to say “fuck the book.” You won’t ever see a boss work the trenches on a holiday. As a shift, that’s on you. You make it work the best you can, because there’s no manual for it. The college kids don’t even know what a thanksgiving at the bux is like. But you do.
Mewlover23 2 points 6m ago
Does he really want to see what we can do when we bleed? I'm sure he wouldn't like it
Sinderellas_Shoe 2 points 6m ago
I’d have taken it up 100 notches and told him I’d be hitting him with a massive lawsuit/medical bill if I ended up with toxic shock syndrome 🤡
HarleySpicedLatte 2 points 6m ago
I hope this was a joke. Guessing by the comments it not though
burntsriracha 2 points 6m ago
tell him he better hold back these hands before they start swingin’ on him
i-am-not-sure-yet 2 points 6m ago
I don't ask. I tell them hey I'm going to the bathroom and go. I have diabetes and I need to go frequently if I drink a lot of water
creatorofstuffn 2 points 6m ago
Really? Is this "supervisor" like 12 years old.
fredforthered 1 points 6m ago
Not even. My 5th grade class had a seminar on bodily functions/hygiene in 1998. I was out of school that day so they saved my deodorant and pads for me🥺
Euphoric_Ad1240 2 points 6m ago
No way 😂
WingsofFlight 2 points 6m ago
Erm no. That is messed up. Next time tell him, get someone to cover your station and simply go. No one should be allowed to deny bathroom breaks. If someone said to me I need to go, I would be like sure, then get someone to cover that position or do it myself. Health comes first.
Necessary_Low939 2 points 6m ago
Don’t because if u don’t change it, u can get that toxic syndrome and lose a limb. I forgot the actual name.
hailvy 2 points 6m ago
You were close, toxic shock syndrome
Necessary_Low939 1 points 6m ago
Thanks. it’s serious business.
Muted_Obligation4501 1 points 6m ago
No because I would have became disrespectful so fast
Muted_Obligation4501 1 points 6m ago
I’m not even a shift and if I’m floating or have nothing as like the perma cs for my store I cover people. Everybody deserves to go to the restroom, nobody should have to hold anything in. If you didn’t say anything to that dumbass motherfucker I would go straight to sm and dm about it and get his dumbass in trouble
mariesnowelle 1 points 6m ago
Whenever I'm on my period i'm not waiting for a yes or no, im saying "I'm going to the restroom" and leaving so I can change my pad idc. Sorry not sorry I'm not working in the same pad for 8 hours...also your male SSV should get educated on female anatomy as we literally can't "hold it in" what??
tourniquette2 1 points 6m ago
You should definitely report this to your SM and maybe to the Starbucks Ethics Violations line. This is very illegal and could get SB sued. That shift needs to be corrected ASAP.
Gameb0i6 1 points 6m ago
Eww. Fuck him. Get him fired.
bustakita 1 points 6m ago
I would be sending an email to HR because it will serve as a notification regarding the situation. Don't embellish the unfortunate series of events, just stick to the facts And also make mention of exactly what the shift lead said to you. This will notify them that their manager is denying their employees their given rights as a human being (which BTW, is absolutely insane that he said that to you, OP. As a fellow woman who can empathize with you, especially given my severe never ending MONTHLY non stop cycles FOR YEARS before it ultimately led to life saving surgery.) I'm sorry you had to even experience that. 😢😢

This email sent to HR will also serve as receipts and as I am always saying - RECEIPTS ARE LIFE AND CAN HELP SAVE YOURS/CYA.
Blacksmith_Kitchen 1 points 6m ago
I’m not asking anybody to go to the bathroom. I’m letting them know. Hey, I need to go to bathroom. Call my spot real quick it’s important.
AndrewFan0408 1 points 6m ago
If your store is not busy, just go without asking.
Mr-Yoop 1 points 6m ago
That’s uhhh… kind of illegal, no?
Apprehensive-You5261 1 points 6m ago
At my store we usually just ask each other to cover if someone needs to use the bathroom and rarely even ask a shift as long as someone covers for you I don’t think it matters plus you’re all adults nobody needs permission to use the bathroom. I’d report him to hr because on top of this being a OSHA violation he was a complete ass and sexist. The fact that he thinks you can just control your period he must have never taken a basic biology class 🤡
Greedy_Visual6710 1 points 6m ago
You ASKED… to use the BATHROOM? Wow
rterrebo 1 points 6m ago
I'd document and report. That's not cool.

This happened I am sure. Also you’re not in middle school.
VictorianLibra22 -6 points 6m ago
TMI! Asking to use the washroom/informing your shift you were stepping off the floor to use the washroom would’ve been perfectly adequate 😵
Extreme_Piece3922 [OP] 6 points 6m ago
i didn’t explicitly say i was on my period or gave any hints to it. i asked to go to the bathroom and that was all because i wasn’t comfortable saying out loud to someone im not close to that i was on my period. when he told me to hold it, i just thought to myself “this is not something that i can hold” and was slightly amused and annoyed by the situation. also periods are completely normal and part of life.
