Service dogs (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by Zealousideal-Star448
I know we allow customers to bring them in, however are baristas allowed to have them with them on bar and such? I’m in the process of finding a diagnosis and one of them means I can have a service dog and seriously improve my health a and safety. Is it allowed? Like food safety wise?
Do any other baristas have service dogs?

I would think they’d be considered a hazard (tripping, food safety, burn risk, ect.)

That’s what I was thinking but I never heard anything about it that’s why I figured I would ask everybody. My manager has had a stick up her tush since I keep having to call out, the one time I didn’t I literally fainted in boh.

Nope. Service animals have public access rights but that access is specifically restricted to areas any other member of the public would be able to access, which is why they can come into restaurants when pets can’t, but wouldn’t be allowed in food prep areas, for example. They are medical equipment, and of course disabled people must be provided reasonable accommodation in the course of their employment. That includes use of medical equipment. However, part of reasonable accommodations means that they do not have negatively effect on health and safety in the business. A service animal would be a pretty serious food safety issue, and thus not considered a reasonable accommodation.

As another example, people who wear heart monitors on their wrist can’t wear them and work with food because of the food safety aspect.

If you want a role where your service animal would be able to come to work, I would seriously consider looking to get an office job, if you are able. You can always start as a temp somewhere to get office experience and then transition into a full time position in an office.

Starbucks’s accommodation process is the most hellish process on the planet and I don’t think they would allow you to have a service dog with you on shift, unfortunately.
