tipping (self.starbucksbaristas)
submitted by supremesunshine
so i have a customer who wants to tip specific baristas. does anyone know where the exact rules are on tipping specific baristas? i know that it has to be in a sealed envelope with the barista’s name on it, but, my managers still make us put it into the tip jar. is there anything written down that says they have to let us keep them?

"does anyone know where the exact rules are"

yes, they are in the partner handbook. Starbucks has no official policy that says you can receive direct tips in any way. the sealed envelope thing is a legend that many managers look away from because it's easier on everyone, but officially there is no way to directly tip a barista.

in other words, you are never going to find a written policy that says "here is how to get around the tipshare and keep an entire tip for yourself" although many stores allow you to do it informally.

Specifically, this can be found on page 32 of the April 2020 revision of the US Store Edition of the Partner Guide. First paragraph on the page.

Relevant passage:

> Partners may not give or accept a gift of money or a cash equivalent. Instead, partners should advise any customers offering cash gifts that they can only be accepted as tips that will be shared with eligible store partners.

I would tell the customer, they could always just put it inside of a thank you card and put that in an envelope. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I was always told that as long as it’s sealed in an envelope with your name on it, you can keep it

Uhmmm that doesn’t sound right. It literally has your name on it why do they make you put it in the tip jar anyway??

i’m not sure🤷🏼‍♀️ the regular said that every time she has tried, she has been threatened to be banned if she kept trying to tip specific baristas
