One of Reddit’s biggest communities is suggesting users move to Discord (theverge.com)
submitted 17h ago by marketrent
9-11GaveMe5G 413 points 17h ago
Discord is not a replacement. I use it, so I'm not anti discord. It's just not even remotely the same
stormdelta 41 points 7h ago
Discord would be an extremely poor replacement for reddit. It sucks for asynchronous communication past a certain server size, it wasn't designed for that at all.

Nor is indexed or searchable in any meaningful sense even from within, let alone from outside e.g. search engines.

Discord's a perfectly fine service but this is absolutely not what it's for.
akrenon 24 points 4h ago
I heard someone call Discord a "black hole for information" which I think is absolutely true. Just imagine how many fixes were shared on Discord never to be found again. Whenever I run into any PC issue my first approach is to google "how to fix xyz reddit" and 90 % of the time it will already solve my problem.
QuesoMeHungry 8 points 3h ago
Discord is a chat app for friends, that’s it. Anything beyond that is pointless. Anything on Discord is limited to members in the chat, it’s not searchable on Google, it’s just bad. The walled gardening of the internet continues.
anti-torque 2 points 1h ago
Was going to say discord is just irc in a slightly different form.
CHADallaan 2 points 42m ago
having to scroll for everything is hella annoying besides making liberal use of pins the channel clutter makes it cumbersome to use and annoying. plus when you have an ocean of users it forces the mods to put everything in slow mode which kindof kills the whole fun of it to me.
exclamationmarkman 37 points 17h ago
I don’t know how to use Discord efficiently/correctly. It feels like Reddit is following Twitter down the shitter. Would Discord be a viable interim news source? Until something else other than Threads comes along?
9-11GaveMe5G 50 points 15h ago
Discovery is a huge issue. There's no "front page" or all or popular to discover anything. You have to also already be a member of the discord server (server being the sorta equivalent of a subreddit) in order to read or post or anything. It's a self-limiting system by nature which is the polar opposite of reddit that even lets non-account holders browse.
tasbir49 10 points 10h ago
Discord servers also have limits. It took me multiple tries to get into some servers cuz of the member limit
AwesomeFrisbee 6 points 9h ago
Yeah and its just sorting by date/time instead of popularity so you have to sift through lots of boring stuff to get to the good parts. And many channels move either too slow or too fast to really enjoy browsing
ConstableGrey 2 points 4h ago
I hate every game company that decides to replace their forum (or even subreddit) with a discord. A perpetually-scrolling page is not conducive to long-term discussion or finding announcements!
metallicrooster 1 points 1h ago
The nice thing is they have a threads feature where you can post something and people can comment on it directly.

It’s not ideal since it doesn’t have fully nested comments like Reddit, but it’s better than Facebook and YouTube so that’s something I guess
exclamationmarkman 2 points 14h ago
I’ll try it out again.
Proud_Tie 0 points 10h ago
There is though (with 3rd party sites that is)

https://discordservers.com/

https://discadia.com/

Etc
dangerbird2 1 points 2h ago
It's a good replacement for subs' "daily/weekly threads" or similar open discussion/shitposting threads. It also has support for forum-style threads that are theoretically better for archiving than the standard discord chatrooms. But still it's no replacement for a searchable and archivable aggregator like reddit
IntertelRed 28 points 11h ago
Discord has beyond 0 discovery. It's a messaging app for communities of friends, buisness associates for group chats, communications with companies, large groups meet ups, content creators to chat woth viewers and schools casual chats ontop of some other uses. It's good for hyper specific news like I am in a community for my schools game development students and it's great for news related to student specific game development news in my country in my specific area accessible to my specific school.

But I would never learn Microsoft was approved on the trade deal there for blizzard there because it's not about that.

I think that should really show you why it isn't a reddit replacement. Compare it to reddit where I can follow r/technology and get more general tech news.
exclamationmarkman 1 points 11h ago
Awesome explanation, thanks!
IntertelRed 1 points 11h ago
Glad it helped.
exclamationmarkman 1 points 11h ago
Awesome explanation, thanks!
SIGMA920 10 points 16h ago
> Would Discord be a viable interim news source? Until something else other than Threads comes along?

Only so long as you aren't part of 101 or more different servers.
PreviousGas710 16 points 16h ago
I’m a part of like 25 and that shit has become unusable
space_wiener 9 points 16h ago
I was part of maybe four? I couldn’t keep track of anything. Especially the high traffic ones.
marketrent [OP] 2 points 2h ago
For what its worth, many comments in reply to this post seem to be stridently discouraging Reddit users from trying Discord.
jazir5 5 points 10h ago
Kbin or Lemmy, closest things to a Reddit replacement.
D3-Doom 1 points 10h ago
Yea, I hate to admit it but it’s kind of difficult and it feels like chaos when something significant is happening
G_Morgan 1 points 6h ago
Discord is just a white noise simulator.
everybodytotheIimit 1 points 4h ago
>Would Discord be a viable interim news source?

Absolutely not. That’s not what it’s used for.
KitchenPlace69 2 points 2h ago
This narrative is driven by nerds, and something I've repeatedly noticed over the years is that nerds don't use social media in the same way as the rest of us. They use social media primarily as tools to create focused discussion forums. Most people aren't doing that - they're on social media to consume content, not so much to actually created that content or discuss it. This is why redditors hate Twitter so much, because while Twitter is (or was) a great tool for content consumption, it's a terrible one for having actual discussions.

Most people on reddit are here to just scroll and read things. When they hear Discord mooted as a reddit alternative, they immediately clock that as nonsense. But nerds simply see it as another place for them to host a discussion forum.
02Alien 1 points 1h ago
Okay but discord is terrible as a discussion forum so I don't understand why even those people see it as a viable alternative
marketrent [OP] 0 points 17h ago
Perhaps it is not intended as “a replacement” but as a step in community-building? According to the “message from a Reddit admin (employee)” sent to volunteer moderators:^1

>>If you are interested in actively moderating this subreddit please reopen it and reply to this modmail within the next 3 days to outline your plans going forward.

>>If we do not hear back, we will remove your moderator status and form a new moderator team

In reply to this message, volunteer moderators say that they have been “actively monitoring and addressing content in its moderation queue and moderation messaging system.”
BroForceOne 76 points 14h ago
The only people who think Discord is a viable replacement for Reddit are the sickos who sort by New.
InHootsWeTrust 12 points 8h ago
Disgusting. As a man of culture I exclusively sort by controversial.
Deareim2 4 points 9h ago
I sorr by New time to time. What is the issue ?
Aquaticulture 106 points 16h ago
I was wondering why they wouldn't put the community in the title...

/r/malefashionadvice is why
Cycode 35 points 13h ago
first time i hear about this sub and i'm here on reddit for 12 years.. "one of reddits biggest communities"? yeahh. dunno.
pat_the_giraffe 11 points 10h ago
There’s dozens of us! Dozens!
Cycode -4 points 8h ago
cool. i'm happy for you & the users who enjoy that topic (seems the sub is closed now, so i guess you guys are now somewhere else like lemmy).

but like i said, i still have never heard about the sub. what was it about exactly?
tacodepollo 9 points 6h ago
I too am curious what a sub called MaleFashionAdvice could be about. Guess we'll never know.
printial 3 points 6h ago
Lol, I can't afford new pants. It's not a fashion choice, food is just more important than new pants.
Cycode 0 points 6h ago
i don't even know exactly what the sub was about, so your comment isn't really telling me anything. i can assume that the sub was about male fashion advice, but i don't know the specific details what actually happend in that sub (its private now, so i can't even check). so.. yeah. dunno what you want to tell me with that comment.

like i said. i don't know that sub and never heard about it. so your comment isn't really telling me anything because i don't know the context.
marketrent [OP] -18 points 12h ago
>**Cycode**

>first time i hear about this sub and i'm here on reddit for 12 years.. "one of reddits biggest communities"? yeahh. dunno.

Then its likely that you never sought out content that its 5 million subscribers did.
Cycode 4 points 12h ago
even if you don't actively look for it, usually you get it shoved into your face in popular etc. if its a bigger subreddit. but i never did (never heard anyone talking about it anywhere on reddit, never saw a post from them etc.), so dunno.
mthrfkn 1 points 2h ago
I’ve been on Reddit for 12 years and I am aware that they exist, hell I even enjoy their inspo folders. With that said they also share very good written pieces so I’ve learned about more than a few bloggers through them. The Internet is a big place and it’s impossible for anyone person to really stay on top of it.
Stefan_S_from_H 1 points 6h ago
This explains it. Nobody googles for fashion advice and reads a 10 years old post.
marketrent [OP] -24 points 12h ago
>**Aquaticulture**

>I was wondering why they wouldn't put the community in the title...

Who is “they”?

(And the community is named in the subtitle.)

>**Aquaticulture**

>/r/malefashionadvice is why

Why?
zxyzyxz 25 points 12h ago
Why do you quote your comments like this? So that people can't edit or delete them?

Also, it is clear that the above poster is talking about how the title is clearly clickbaiting people, when they could've simply put the subreddit in the title itself, not the subtitle that people won't see until they come to the page. But of course, then how will The Verge get those tasty ad views?
marketrent [OP] -20 points 12h ago
>**zxyzyxz**

>Also, it is clear that the above poster is talking about how the title is clearly clickbaiting people, when they could've simply put the subreddit in the title itself, not the subtitle that people won't see until they come to the page.

Comments focusing on titles instead of linked content may be off-topic.
zxyzyxz 24 points 11h ago
Now I'm beginning to think this is some elaborate GPT bot...
Aphile 1 points 3h ago
That's funny, I was LITERALLY looking for this sub right before this thread came up into my feed.
AverageRedditeurTM 1 points 3h ago
Lmaoooooooo. What will reddit do without its cash cow subreddit of thrift store shopping college sophomores?
extopico 11 points 8h ago
Discord is terrible for any type of content related activities. As a mega chat/forum platform it’s kind of OK, but it is in no way Reddit like.
tasbir49 7 points 10h ago
Discord is a terrible replacement for so many reasons. It's best use would be as a holding place while starting the transition to somewhere else.
TheGrinningSkull 1 points 3h ago
I wouldn’t even use it as a holding place.
caverunner17 10 points 13h ago
/r/hardwareswap is trying the same thing.

The mods had to lock the announcement thread because there was so much pushback for the community to just reopen.

I wonder how long until Reddit admin starts pulling these mods from these subs and allowing people who actually want to continue the sub in the normal fashion to moderate.
zxyzyxz 11 points 12h ago
Good, /r/hardwareswap mods were fucking annoying. No, I don't want to move to Discord, I just want to sell a fucking GPU. If they don't want to moderate it anymore, they can leave and open it up to new mods.
Zozorrr 1 points 5h ago
They all left - don’t you remember? July 1 was when all the high maintenance princesses turned off Reddit. That’s what they told us.

liars.
zxyzyxz 1 points 1h ago
Exactly, these people in their parents' basement really don't want to give it up.
caverunner17 0 points 12h ago
Agreed. They need to amend the redditrequest rules to allow for subs that went private or locked since the protest rather than rejecting due to “activity”
zxyzyxz 2 points 11h ago
Yeah for sure. I think after a few months they'll allow it again, or in the meantime if they're still private or restricted, admins will step in as they've done recently.
Onekone 0 points 2h ago
But they don't have to

And if it is only about mods, you can make a sub yourself in 15 minutes
sweetcinnamonpunch 5 points 4h ago
Discord sucks balls as a reddit replacement.
SupremeLeaduh 12 points 16h ago
Discord sucks
SUPRVLLAN 1 points 49m ago
Discord is fantastic.

It isn’t a reddit replacement though.
CruellyStingy 17 points 14h ago
What sub?
r/malefashionadvice

Anyway....
smarterthantheaverag 3 points 11h ago
Discord will get old, real fast. It does have a purpose, but is better for Fantasy sports and gaming.
VoltronicEnergy 3 points 9h ago
Discord is good for in the moment group conversation but it is awful for per topic group discussion over an extended window. In short, it’s not a Reddit replacement. Message boards are so if determined to replace a sub, that would be your answer.
Guy_Mandersonn 3 points 2h ago
The internet needs a new Reddit desperately but Discord is not it
SUPRVLLAN 1 points 47m ago
Lemmy or whatever is also not it.
sboger 19 points 17h ago
r/malefashionadvice?!?!!?!?!? Are they fucking serious!??!!?!?

Buh bye... Bye now....
marketrent [OP] -2 points 16h ago
>**sboger**

>r/malefashionadvice?!?!!?!?!? Are they fucking serious!??!!?!?

It is possible that the subreddit’s 5 million subscribers are missing opportunities to see ~~community~~ brand content.
animatedrouge2 3 points 15h ago
Damn it, where will I get compliments on my Clark’s Desert Boots and raw denim now???
everybodytotheIimit 5 points 4h ago
Lol, no thanks. Discord is not a Reddit replacement. It’s fine for its own purpose (real time group communication) but it sucks shit when trying to use it for informational purposes like you would many subreddits.

I think it’s funny many mods are encouraging their users to go to their discords, where they feel it’s truly “their” thing so they can lord over the communities even more than they do on Reddit.
Lurkingguy1 10 points 10h ago
99% of redditors do not give a shit about this protest or the ‘cause’ mods are pursuing. Get a damn paying job already.
l3mmyCaution 2 points 2h ago
Wow. “One of the biggest communities” I hadn’t heard of until today. Also, is this being pushed by the users at large, or the mods, who still have their panties in a bunch. 🤔 Fake news!
hasanahmad 2 points 2h ago
When do /r/technology mods moving to discord so we don’t get this verge anti reddit crap daily
brodega 6 points 17h ago
Lol let’s see how that works out for ya
gamingnerd777 3 points 9h ago
Isn't discord technically a chatroom? That's the impression I got from using it once or twice. Didn't care for it. What makes it any different than old school chatrooms like AOL used to have?

I feel old. 😬

Edit: Damn I miss going into AOL chatrooms in the mid 90s and playing fatex unscrambler games. Discord got any of those kind of rooms?
Chooch-Magnetism 7 points 17h ago
*Checks to see which sub this is*

Go for it, nothing of value will be lost.
[deleted] -5 points 16h ago

discretion 1 points 16h ago
Wealthy folks.
zeptillian 7 points 14h ago
You don't understand. Without 3rd party apps we can't moderate effectively. If they are going to charge for 3rd party apps then we will move to a site that does not allow them at all.

\-The people behind this shit probably.
SIGMA920 -10 points 13h ago
> If they are going to charge for 3rd party apps then we will move to a site that does not allow them at all.

A reasonable fee wouldn't have been a problem. The fee was unreasonable.
One_Passenger9917 5 points 12h ago
It's not unreasonable--they just don't want these apps. Get over it.
SIGMA920 -9 points 12h ago
Despite that reddit will lose more money than it'll bring in?
One_Passenger9917 6 points 12h ago
Wait people are still talking about this API thing? Who fucking cares?
SeamusDubh 7 points 7h ago
I thought all those people said they were leaving back on July 1st.
Crack_uv_N0on 5 points 7h ago
That’s like saying you’re moving to Canada.
isayporschewrong 11 points 12h ago
It never occurred to me that after their dumb protest failed we'd have to hear about it ad nauseam.

If you hate Reddit so much, just leave. It's not that difficult to uninstall an app.
No_Combination_649 -6 points 10h ago
Well, for the people who protested it wasn't about uninstalling an app because they never used the official Reddit App, they wanted to be able to continue using the far superior third party apps
WizardMoose -6 points 7h ago
A lot of people lol. I'm only on Reddit because Relay is keeping it up for a little longer. Once Relay is gone, I'll be on Reddit a hell of a lot less.
Geppetto_Cheesecake 2 points 14h ago
This article brought to you by the good folks at 9gag.
3DHydroPrints 2 points 9h ago
Oh no... Anyway
pinko_zinko 1 points 13h ago
And nothing of value was lost. Take it either way, works for both sides.
marketrent [OP] 1 points 17h ago
Admin communications suggest that Reddit employees could intervene in moderating content produced by communities:^1

>If Reddit installs new mods that reopen the community, Zach believes that while many people will go back, “most of the regulars probably won’t return,” he says. “Dozens of bots (and human bad actors) plague [subreddit] on the daily, and without proper mod tools, it’ll get even harder to keep them out.”

>Reddit didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.

HuffmanIsAnIdiot 1 points 3h ago
I find Discord to be horrible. Even worse interface than the official reddit app.

Might as well go to IRC if you want an old school interface.
PDXalreadtused 1 points 15h ago
It’s not a replacement. At least this will help me kick my phone addiction habit.
n3w4cc01_1nt 1 points 14h ago
are they sure that mfa isnt moving to discord so they can share mgtow info then send each other nsfw pics?
thegravity98ms2 1 points 8h ago
If Reddit went to Discord I fear I will have new phobia of missing out
ripe_chode 0 points 14h ago
Fuck that furries , pedos and gamers ….wait a minute
Crack_uv_N0on 0 points 7h ago
Is it possible for mods to just close their subreddits? Then Reddit can bring about replacements and have to build them from scratch.

Oh, what fun this will be. /s
notahouseflipper 0 points 4h ago
Not the same. Does Discord have the poop knife, or The Front Fell Off, or in 1997 Mankind threw a wrestler 16 feet…….?
AmadeusFalco -5 points 15h ago
I'm making an app that will be similar to reddit . Prob won't go anywhere but I hope to have it out soon and will post it on Reddit to get people to try
kinenbi -2 points 3h ago
Discord is basically owned by China, so no thanks!
SUPRVLLAN 1 points 46m ago
So is reddit.
puddleofaids- -3 points 6h ago
Who gives a shit? Why is this news worth writing about?
pookshuman 0 points 6h ago
because people give a shit
FruitParfait 1 points 9h ago
That’s going to be a fucking mess lol. I used to mod for a server with about 6k people and even that was rough. Can’t imagine trying to mod a server with waaaaay more people
1312_netrunner_666 1 points 6h ago
Terrible suggestion. At least, the content of Reddit is indexed by search engines, so it is searchable from the outside world. Discord is a voice/video/text chat platform, not a forum(-like) service.
EdliA 1 points 6h ago
Discord sucks and it's not like I didn't try getting into it. It's not a replacement for Reddit at all.
ArmiRex47 1 points 4h ago
So said community is about to die or have x10 less users
CHADallaan 1 points 44m ago
why move to a shitty discord when kbin social is perfectly usable?
