Context: I'm a 21yr old design student and as part of our luxury product design class, we need to design a collection for a luxury brand. I want to redesign the slate and stylus system for the brand Montegrappa and give importance to the art of writing by hand. I'm hoping to learn more about the system and understand better
These are some questions I had :
What are the problems you face , if any, while using the slate and stylus? Who uses it and in what situations? Are the sizes of the slates restrictive? Is it comfortable ? What type of stylus is preferred? What are the pros/cons of it ? Are there any other systems of writing by hand?
If there was a luxury version available and price wasn't a concern, would you use it
I'm sorry there's a lot I don't know. I don't post on reddit much and I'm new here. I hope this is okay

Hi, this comment is not meant to offend the commenter, but I have some clarifications. The stylous with the ball grip is uncomfortable for everyone, so a sattle grip is recommended. The 4 pins in the corner are meant to hold the paper in place, and to be used to line up the paper when writing on a page. There is no space for Braille numbers, but the tactile dots and bold lines on the slate serve a purpose. I like the idea of attaching the slate to the slate..

I actually found my wooden mushroom/ball stylus comfortable compared to the saddle one I have.

That's a fun idea, even though it's not the most useful or practical thing, but hey, that's luxury!
It's been awhile since I used one, but i do remember one thing that annoyed me was that if you pushed too hard with the stylus, you'd get a hole in the paper, so the braille doesn't look as nice.
I would love an ergonomically designed stylus, that's also cute. I remember mine being made of wood where you hold it, but I think there's probably other materials out there. I wouldn't recommend the wood.
The pros are that it's way cheaper than a brailler, and more portable--ooo, a cute case would be great, too! The cons are the holes I mentioned, and the slate (I had metal) makes holes or dents, too I think. And obviously, it's much slower than anything else. It's the only "handwriting" I know of, though.
I would totally use it if it was cute and free :-)

YAY thank you, this is super helpful ! I don't understand luxury products but I'm hoping to redefine it
What went wrong with the wood?

So, it was the bulbous kind of stylus, so I'm not sure how much of it was that it was wood and how much was the shape...but generally, wood is pretty firm with no give. You know how luxurious pens have cushiony grips? I think that is something to consider...something that has a little give or cushion for your hand. So, I'm not opposed to having some wood there, but I think I would combine it with another material.

A sattle grip will help the stylous be much more comfortable.

Yeah, I did a search and saw those, but I've never used one. It does look more ergo

Oke awesome, thank you so much!

Make the hinges a little bit resistant to opening, like a high quality tape player.
fizznot [OP]1 points2y ago
Oo what kind of problems does it cause now
Altie-McAltface1 points2y ago
None whatsoever, but you specifically said "Luxury", and when I think of a high-end product that has a hinge, that's what I think of.

Okee thank you so much!

Cool. Think the kickstand on the Microsoft surface

As a dayley user of the slate and stylous, these would be my prefrences:
Most slates are constructed of plastic or aluminum, these bend, and a dencer metal would be more expensive and it would hopefully not bend. Size: I carry this with me, so pocket size would be ideal; 20 by 6 Braille cells. My favorite slate is duel sided, meaning that I can write on one side and then flip it to continue writing in the other side. The stylous needs to be of a mettal that can be shaped with a wet stone, and as I mentioned before, the sattle handle is preferable. A leather pouch would be great, and it make it a luxury item.

Thank you so much for this! I'll keep this in mind

If there was a way to turn the stylus into some type of simple tool that you could use to make the dots with less pressure, like a hole punch, that would be cool.
