Coping with nerve-damage induced impairment (self.Blind)
submitted by crd1293
Hi,

This is pretty new to me. My sister has blindness due to uncontrolled diabetes and she’s really struggling to cope.

I’m trying to find resources that can help her live well even with this impairment. If you have any affordable tech related equipment that could help that would be much appreciated. She’s only in her 30s and before all this really enjoyed reading and movies so if here’s literally anything that can even help a little that would be amazing.

Rehabilitation is probably the most well-rounded option, very much depends where you live as to how that works.

Obviously, smart speakers work without eyes, so nothing changes there. Perhaps worth exploring more of their features if you haven’t done so already. Little things, like setting a named timer or resuming an audiobook, can go a long way.

All smartphones, computers, tablets etc have screen readers. The learning curve is pretty big yet if your sister’s determined, she can undoubtedly master these things.

Movie theatres, DVDs, streaming services and some TV channels provide audio-description tracks for *some* programmes and films. It’s an extra voice describing the important visuals.

Learning Braille, that’s a tricky one. Diabetes can often reduce finger sensitivity so I won’t go off on a long moan about kids blind from birth only using audiobooks and being atrocious writers. But that is very sad. If she has the touch ability, Braille will uber helpful. Braille playing cards, board games etc can do a lot for inclusivity with the family.

hello there, let me take the liberty of doing a self diagnosis of your sister, based on the things mentioned by you. this is totally a deviation from your topic, but i think is equally important.

1. your sister could be suffering from retina damage, and most probably in early / mid / last stages of retina detachment. The only solution is for vitrectomy. silicon oil into the eyeballs and laser to the retina. irreversible. damage to optic nerve also. may effect both eyes.

2. kidneys! after the eyes , our friendly neighbour diabetes attacks the kidneys. I am sure you are getting her checked with a good nephrologist.

Life can still be continued with the above conditions, but what is most required is support from family and friends. She may not willingly ask for help, but deep down, she does need heaps. She may have or is already in depression. Get her out of it before it’s too late.

And give her the technology, mobile with talk back or voice over, computers with screen reader softwares, and let her explore the world. let her know that there are others like her in this world, and she is not alone.

Accessible technology will open new frontiers for her, and you maybe surprised if one day she comes out as a totally new person!

so keep trying, and good luck.

What country/state do you live in? There is probably some rehabilitation resources that can help. Some places will also have funding for equipment as well, although that can vary greatly between different locations.
