Seeing AI alternative apps? (self.Blind)
submitted by yoyo2718
I’ve been going to the library for my kid during covid. Mostly I reserve books online ahead of time so I can just pick up a bunch from the reserve shelf when I go, but sometimes I need to find an extra book or two from the shelves. I’d really like to do this independently, but I can’t read the call numbers. I tried Seeing AI, and short text kinda works for the nonfiction numbers, though not reliably. But in fiction, it doesn’t seem to want to read the letters since they aren’t full words. Is there another app that might do this? Of course I can ask a librarian, but I’m stubborn that way. 😁 I guess I can pull out an individual book and see the author name, but when looking for a series or something knowing the call letters would help. Ideas?

I think most apps you will try to do this with will give you a similar result, but uou could try Envision or Supersense

Be My Eyes

Grab a pair of headphones and have somebody help you with this app. I find a volunteers tend to be more happier when you have a complicated task at hand but they also don’t seem to mind helping you very very simple task. Overall it depends on the volunteer you get but they all seem very happy to help.

Trust me on this but they are just excited to be helpful. I'm trying to get the app developer on here to do an AMA in the near future.

Oh no I know they are very happy to help in fact 99% of them are super happy to help. I guess what I was trying to say is that they like more challenging request. For example they like helping me with like installing parts on a computer versus help me turn on this washing machine with a digital control panel.

That would be cool, I’d follow that one!

Oh, I didn’t even think of that, thank you! I recently downloaded the app but haven’t tried it yet, is it pretty quick to connect?
akrazyho 3 points 1y ago
It is very fast to respond to call several volunteers at once and the first person to pick up gets your request

Yeah, I asked one person to read a title to a book and she wasn’t too happy about it I think she was thinking of something more complex

In my experience on the iPhone, Supersense does a better job at instant text reading, but Envision is a close second. Supersense also provides more voice guidance in document mode.

Good to know, thanks!

Something I have found recently is that the iPhone camera has pretty powerful AI. It even will read the numbers off of a credit card. It means taking the picture then opening it to read the text detected. Hope this helps a bit 😊

What are you using to read the text in a photo? Is this a built in function? I have a really old iPhone.

Hi, it is just the latest iOS, but I’m using a 13 Pro, so not sure if it is unique to it or not. All I do is take the picture, open photos/Recents and when you open the picture, it has a function to automatically detect text. If there is a phone number for example, you can tap on it to call the number. Hope this helps
