Hollywood's 'Groundbreaking' AI Proposal for Actors Is a Nightmare (gizmodo.com)
submitted 11h ago by esporx
Ramoncin 65 points 5h ago
1) Underpay actors for their image rights. 2) Underpay CGI companies for their work. 3) Get shit CGI acting like Peter Cushing in "Rogue One".

The perfect plan.
madmaxGMR 24 points 4h ago
Spam is to fill the stomach, not to feed the soul. Same thing with movies as product. You are cattle to milk to these people.
InappropriateTA 10 points 2h ago
Bruh, spam can definitely feed the soul.

Looks like the film industry is about to suffer a crash just like the video game industry. Expect lots of indie studios to pop up and go back to making passion projects and art, instead of committee decided paint by numbers slop entertainment.
Otherwise-Olive-4771 9 points 1h ago
I dunno. The barrier to entry to make a decent independent film is a lot more expensive than to make a decent indy game.
SIGMA920 1 points 1h ago
> The barrier to entry to make a decent independent film is a lot more expensive than to make a decent indy game.

By what standard are you going by? If you think these would be hollywood style films, you're thinking too big. Just look at the gold that's came out of relatively small but passionate youtube channels producing quality content, just not hollywood level of quality when it comes to things like CGI.
Otherwise-Olive-4771 2 points 1h ago
Well a decent indy game can be made by one dedicated, talented person they just need enough money to take a year or two off work. Maybe they would have to pay an artist or musician if they cant do those things. but thats only for a small number of hours compared to the actual development of the game.

To make an independent film you have to at minimum pay actors and then also take a year or two off work to shoot and edit it. Then there is the costs of going on location and accommodation for the actors, props and costumes etc. There are just more overheads involved.
SIGMA920 1 points 58m ago
That's why I said relatively small, a crew of lets say 7 or so people can make a decent enough quality series/film with a limited cast. It'll be limited in that you can't really hire big name actors but that's not necessarily a problem if you don't need them. Just see the found footage genre of films or analog horror series for what a small cast can go without the quality being awful.
lordpugfart 1 points 32m ago
It depends on your standards. I've seen tiktok kids make some pretty good looking stuff. The theatres will die, but the indies will make their own platforms to share their work. It's how it goes.
tylerthe-theatre 35 points 6h ago
Underpinned by a need to save and ultimately make more money, *everything* comes back to capitalism.
fortunefaded3245 30 points 4h ago
Every problem in American society that has a solution which is never implemented is a problem because rich capitalists extract profits from it.

Automation doesn't go on strike, risky business doing a strike in 2023 with how replaceable everyone is
secretactorian 1 points 1h ago
You can't replace nuance, spontaneity, or personal life experiences that contribute to human emotion.
demoran 47 points 7h ago
I mean, I bet if they went to non-actors and were like "Hey, we want to scan you to use you in films, here's a few thousand dollars", they'd be swimming in models.

And those background actors would still be out of work.

Change is coming, my friends.
mr_needlemaus 15 points 6h ago
I’m confused why they even proposed this at all. Movies and tv already use cgi for “crowds” or back ground fill. The cgi will continue to get better. It seems like an individual would value their likeness highly (as they/you should) but there won’t be a point where the money per scan makes sense on economics and makes the actor feel valued.
BevansDesign 2 points 1h ago
Why use real people when AI can already generate completely realistic fake people?
demoran 1 points 1h ago
It's easy for people to forget that the movies they watch and love are actually animated. That's all green screen really is: animation in a realistic style.
party_in_Jamaica_mon -2 points 2h ago
Scanning models to be used in games and art has been a thing for at least a decade now.
secretactorian 1 points 1h ago
One day's pay for bg work is like $180? if you're SAG, less if you're non union. So it's not a couple thousand, it's a couple hundred.

And they could use that image for *whatever* they want. In perpetuity. Without your consent.

Sure, some folks would sign up for it. But if you lay out what the studios could actually do with it, I bet folks would think differently.
TheDeadlySquid 7 points 4h ago
Doesn’t matter what is negotiated. In the end, the studios will find a way to use the technology and work around any agreements. Profitability drives everything.

On that note! Go luck Fran! Fight for what is right!
Rocksolidbubbles 5 points 4h ago
Why do they need real people to scan?
acf6b 1 points 3h ago
It will be much better detail with using AI then CGI for movies where no CGI is needed. Such as a rom-com with a public proposal, etc.
ministryofchampagne 1 points 3h ago
Logic like that doesn’t help the actor’s negotiating point.

For both the actors and writers strike there is a big issue with blaming ai. Ai isn’t there yet to be a real threat but it’s a buZz word right now. Both strikes are really about streaming residuals and pay for play.

Just look at carriage drivers, milk men, switchboard operators, and etc… technology isn’t gonna stop because some people may lose their jobs.
xSprite -1 points 1h ago
This technology should be stopped by FBI. AI pirates belong to jail.
ministryofchampagne 1 points 29m ago
“Arrest the people I don’t agree with” - u/xsprite

Logic like that has lead down some dark roads in our history.

That is the next shoe to drop.

When will greedy finally become a punishable crime on this planet.
ChampionshipKlutzy42 27 points 9h ago
When people get educated enough to understand what socialism and communism actually are. Don't count on that any time soon, capitalists would rather everyone else suffer than give up control.
Historical-Theory-49 3 points 1h ago
Because the only alternative to greed is communism.
Past-Direction9145 -9 points 9h ago
Call a spade a spade. It isn’t capitalism it’s slavery. You are a slave. We all are.
ChampionshipKlutzy42 3 points 8h ago
We have nothing to lose but our chains.

Reddit moment!!
serrimo -6 points 6h ago
Hyperbole much?

Not happy? Sell everything and move to a communist country. Cuba is probably the closest one to communism. See how you like it.

We can and definitely should debate social issues. But arguments like yours hurt the debate.
Syaongel -7 points 6h ago
The fact you are down voted without opening any debate tells much. People do not understand what is capitalism nor socialism nor communism nor democracy.

Tell us more about communism Klutzy…
FuckTheCCP42069LSD -4 points 4h ago
Oh I think I know this one, Reddit taught me

Capitalism is when bad communism and socialism is when good, if not good then not real communism or socialism
Satan-o-saurus 10 points 4h ago
You just gave credence to their point about how a large part of the population isn’t educated about economic/political systems, lol. You don’t look like you’re being witty and sarcastic when you write one-liners like these, you just look stupid. It was because of the gullibility of people like you that the Nazi party in Germany named themselves *National Socialist German Workers' Party*. It has «socialist» and «workers’ party» in the name, so surely this must be an accurate representation of socialist ideology, right? Bonk.
FuckTheCCP42069LSD -4 points 4h ago
Nazis called themselves National Socialists because nothing gets the masses writhing in anticipation like the promise of socialism, as evidenced by literally every thread on Reddit and the rise of every self identified socialist revolutionary. Despite the massive differences in politics you had the Democratic Socialists, KPD, and National Socialists competing under their own grifty names.

No one has a plan for actually making it work, they only plan far enough to get in power. As long as the revolution puts them at the top they don't care about the masses.

You think Vaush or Hassan sees themselves working in a Sulfur mine following the revolution? Or do you think they expect to be a politician or philosopher?
Janos101 -17 points 5h ago
Without capitalism we’d still be living in caves with rotten teeth and dying of old age in our 40s
Forsaken-throwaway 10 points 5h ago
Nah, that's just commerce. Capitalism is trash and so is your logic.
No_Opportunity6209 4 points 5h ago

In addition to your assertion that we’d be “dying of old age in our 40s” being incorrect because the average age of death is heavily weighted by the infant mortality rate (if you lived until you were a teenager there was a solid chance you’d die in your 60s thru 80s just like now), capitalism has only existed since the 14th Century, and has only existed in its modern form, with emphasis on mercantilism and trade, labor exploitation, and investment from a non-laboring wealthy class for something like four hundred years. How long ago do you think humans were still living in caves, exactly?
ministryofchampagne -4 points 3h ago
Think back on your life and how many times you’ve been greedy about things. Would you want to go to jail or be punished for them?

Edit: person I’m responding to isn’t talking about rich or poor only greedy.
colonel_beeeees 5 points 2h ago
None of us poors are even capable of the systemic pain that wealthy capital controllers support and engage in daily. Apples and oranges here
FuckTheCCP42069LSD 0 points 2h ago
Who would those controllers be in this case? The people who invented the AI technologies that were used to bust the strike?
colonel_beeeees 1 points 2h ago
The producers trying to use AI to take humans out of art in order to boost next quarter's profit by 3%
ministryofchampagne 0 points 2h ago
The person I was responding to didn’t say anything about rich or poor. Just greedy.

If you want to apply your own twist to their argument you can but it’s not the same argument they’re making.
Positive_Box_69 1 points 3h ago
30 years this world will have a fair new system designed by godly fair AI with only humans 100% in favour no greed no ego only good
OptimisticSkeleton 5 points 4h ago
It would be hilarious if the AI versions of these actors went on strike as well. Wishful thinking but we are like one step away from a Futurama joke being real.

Go back to watching live actors on a stage.
richg0404 2 points 3h ago
My wife and I are doing exactly that tonight.

I love live, local theater.
jimmyray3000 -7 points 4h ago
I've done Background work, but I've alos done crew work and production.

Having BG actors on set can be a nightmare sometimes. It can be dozens or even hundreds of people that need parking, tents, hair, makeup clothing, food, concessions, etc. Film sets can be risky enviroments to,trying to corral doznes or even hundreds of people in and around expensive/ heavy equptments in tight spaces.

Honestly, if people are being "scanned" and they are continued to be payed for their image to be used and aproperate contact considerations are met, I cant see this as nesserally a bad idea.
acf6b 6 points 3h ago
Not according to this deal, did you not read the article, they would get paid for only the day’s work that they get scanned.
Easy-Consequence6800 -2 points 2h ago
How many of you even go to the movies now and watch these Actors?

If I recall, Hollywood movies have been utter shit for some time now.
kaishinoske1 1 points 2h ago
$1 covers what this topic is about.
Azer1287 1 points 1h ago
So basically they want to pay an actor one paycheck once and then never have to pay them again.

Shocking they aren’t embracing that with open arms. /s
