Reddit is ending Reddit Gold and users are furious (mashable.com)
submitted 4h ago by zvone187
NorthImpossible8906 130 points 3h ago
to be honest, I'm not that furious.
dread_deimos 73 points 3h ago
I only have coins because people gave me gold and I do not have a slightest idea what to do with them.
dread_deimos 38 points 3h ago
Ah, come on!
Actuneappl 4 points 1h ago
I'm not even mildly annoyed.
Blubbpaule 9 points 3h ago
yea me too. this is why i give you awards now, fuk you
dread_deimos 5 points 3h ago
I hate you!

^(<3 tho)
Ofortunaa 4 points 2h ago
I love you both! ♥️
Graega 5 points 2h ago
I actually got that message earlier from Reddit - "You've got coins, but coins are going away!"

Me: "What now?"
Perle1234 1 points 29m ago
I know me too lol. They must be from awards but I did think how annoyed I’d be if I had paid for them.
wiriux 1 points 3h ago
I used to be obsessed about getting a reward. For the longest time I hated people who’d get them.

After I got my first one I was so excited and I would open up my comment daily for like a week Lol. Then I got a second, then a third some time later.

Now it’s like: oh a reward? Cool but that’s it.

Edit: I just realized coins are different than rewards? Ok then I don’t know what the hell coins are used for and dont care enough to click on the article :’)
dread_deimos -1 points 3h ago
Yeah, everyone knows that rewards are nothing and actual karma points are everything.

edit on your edit: exactly!
exitlevelposition 1 points 3h ago
Coins were pretty much for purchasing awards. The coins were bought with cash, came from having reddit premium, or came from an award.
biggreencat 1 points 1h ago
sell your username and its karma to grifters and spammers for dozens to hundreds of dollars
wiriux 3 points 3h ago
Are you fast though?
NorthImpossible8906 1 points 3h ago
I'm a big fan of the Fast Or Furious movies.
Power_of_Atturdy 2 points 2h ago
No one’s furious. This is just another clickbait headline to draw in the grumpapotumuses of Reddit.
karmacarmelon 1 points 2h ago
I'm not even mildly peeved.
Ofortunaa 1 points 2h ago
Awards?!?! Gold!?!? Platinum?!?! We don't need any! Rage! Rage against the machine!

No, but seriously fuck spez....
NorthImpossible8906 1 points 2h ago
why not change all awards to "fuck spez" awards.
xSprite 1 points 1h ago
I was going to write that I don't care. But you were faster.
MetaSageSD 48 points 3h ago
We are?
Apple_remote 11 points 3h ago
Let me check with myself. Hold please...

Nope. Not furious.
DulceEtBanana 3 points 2h ago
I think the people who bought into the "you're low, buy some coins" messages would be. (Especially the people who bought in the last few weeks.)
04221970 24 points 3h ago
I don't understand....why am I furious? Why do I care about Reddit Gold? what is Reddit Gold?
martinmcfly9 3 points 3h ago
The thing is, an article title like this can be used and technically true if they find two users are furious. That’s why any article stating that a group of people feel a certain way is almost certainly bullshit.
Ricky_Rollin 1 points 53m ago
That’s all that journalism is these days. “People are feeling this way“ and then they find the two people that tweeted about it never mind that their actual tweets have maybe one like and they have maybe 50 followers.

This is part of the reason why the world’s biggest dumb ass, even if they have barely any followers, feels galvanized. We lend credence to the moronic and unwell.
IgnoringErrors 1 points 24m ago
I love the statements "Emotions are running high..." Yeah, no shit. There are no shortages of emotional reactions.
sunk-capital 52 points 3h ago
As a zero gold owner I have nothing to lose. Power to the peasantry ✊

EDIT: Yes, I worked hard for what I have. Nothing came to me for free and I never got any handouts. I don't like where this place is headed. This ain't Commi Reddit. This is 'MURICA's Reddit!!! Come for my guns, come for my gold, I come for your life...
largephilly 8 points 3h ago
Bootstrap bill turner 😂
pollonium84 2 points 2h ago
LOL that gold award you have there: now you got 100 coins. Spend them!
sunk-capital 2 points 2h ago
I am sorry, but poor people can only contact me through my secretary. If you try this again I will have you arrested.
qatest 3 points 2h ago
As a temporarily inconvenienced gold-haver, I find your comments inspiring and wish to subscribe to your newsletter
icyaccount 12 points 4h ago
Knowing Reddit, they'll just replace it with some nft lootbox.
OldWolf2642 2 points 3h ago
That would *almost* be as absurd as what they are actually going to do.

https://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/14xn70f/reddits_contributor_program_could_earn_you_real/
capslock 1 points 3h ago
Why is this more absurd? People will spend $30 or whatever it is to give someone Platinum like 18 times. The user is just boned with Reddit gold for your life. I’d much rather take real money than know Reddit just got a shit ton of money for my content.

It’s so funny when people spend money on awards and shit to highlight anti-Reddit comments especially. Like where do you think that money was going? Not you specifically just users in general.

When the awards came out in the first place the same outrage happened. Why does Reddit get money for good content? Now it’s being modified and people just don’t want to be happy lol.
OldWolf2642 2 points 3h ago
Are you really naive enough to think you, or any significant number of legitimate redditors, are going to see even a penny of the money that the *'contributor program'* pays out?

I would quite happily wager that a number significantly higher than 50% of the posts on Reddit are made by bots or farming accounts. It has reached a point in the last year or so that has overwhelmed smaller or otherwise niche subs with recycled, generic or just plain reposted content to the point there is nothing else posted at all because it gets drowned out by those accounts. Larger subs are not immune to it either, several of those posts have gotten to the front page despite being called out. And have been flooded with equally generic or stolen comments (literally copy/pastes of other comments in the post).

Most of those accounts very fit nicely into the eligible accounts criteria Reddit will allegedly use should the program happen.

So, in the end, the only people who are going to benefit from this program are the people running bot farms, malicious or otherwise.
capslock 0 points 3h ago
Are you naive enough to think that literally just giving money to Reddit is in any way shape or form better than what’s proposed? Your point stands just as much under the Reddit gold system.
TimidPanther 13 points 3h ago
I always thought they made a mistake going from Reddit Gold to the massive group of lame awards they had available.
It used to be that Reddit Gold meant something. Awards ended up meaning nothing. Even the Platinum, presuming it still exists, it's been a very long time since I've seen it in the wild. It all seems to be those silly awards that don't actually gift the user with any meaningful Reddit time, unlike the good old days of 5 years ago.
Accidental-Genius 6 points 3h ago
The generic sterilization continues as we march steadfastly off the cliff of IPO.
1leggeddog 8 points 3h ago
i dont really give a crap
fwubglubbel 7 points 2h ago
I don't care about awards, but why take away something that makes free money? WTF?
BlubberSauce 9 points 3h ago
A very small percentage of users are furious... like remaining lame mods and other worthless people
sonstone 0 points 3h ago
And premium subscribers…
Darnitol1 5 points 3h ago
What? Oh no, wait... No, I'm furious about overcooking my brownies. Sorry. Sorry for the miscommunication.
Butterbuddha 1 points 3h ago
I too am furious about those brownies that can shatter plates. They smelled so good :(
grimeflea 2 points 3h ago
> so you might have to start looking within yourself for validation.

Amanda Yeo breaking the ice with a dagger to every Redditor’s heart.
TheJoanne 2 points 3h ago
What's reddit gold and why would I need that?
Lick-a-Leper 2 points 2h ago
Premium isn't that great any how. I see maybe 5 quick adds on the free version. Sorry reddit you are not worth 10$
DragonPup 2 points 1h ago
Can't serve ads to people who get awarded gold.
johnlewisdesign 4 points 3h ago
Coming soon: less community clue as to whether what you're reading is legit or not. Less mods. More government and corporate influence. Paid for pro? Oh well, we DGAF!
sarduchi 2 points 4h ago
I saw this coming and canceled my premium membership when the API kerfuffle started.
sonstone 2 points 3h ago
First they come for the API, then they nuke the premium accounts…. Cancelled mine last night. Wish I could get a prorated refund.
Daedelous2k 1 points 3h ago
Who gives a toss?
yParticle 1 points 3h ago
1. Reddit is great!
2. Let's ruin it
3. ???
4. ???
5. Wait... where Profit?
Dedsnotdead 8 points 3h ago
Closely followed by “Meta launches Reddit knockoff!”.
KetosisMD 2 points 3h ago
As soon as Reddit sold some shares to Tencent I started to worry the golden years were over
zvone187 [OP] 1 points 4h ago
I thought they would want to wait a while until the dust settles after the API changes
yParticle 0 points 3h ago
Oh, it's almost certainly a calculated distraction.
Cheap_Coffee 1 points 3h ago
From what? In the end no one gave a shit about the API changes.
shalo62 0 points 3h ago
Not anymore. I was furious when Old Reddit and 3rd part Apps were threatened.

This is just a continuation of the cluster fuck that Reddit is nowdays.

When a viable option for change comes along then I'm out of here. In the meantime, Reddit isn't going to get a penny from me.
TwoTimeTommyTwoCups 1 points 3h ago
old reddit is fine
shalo62 1 points 45m ago
For the moment, yes. But if you think it's going to stay fine you're deluded.
External-Comedian-96 0 points 2h ago
I've recently spent $100 on Reddit coins. The first time I've spent money on social media platform. Apparently, the last one.
Ofortunaa 1 points 2h ago
Don't do it! Don't you give out those awards! Just hold onto it and invest it into whatever crazy idea they come up with next.
Blubbpaule 1 points 1h ago
the coins sadly get deleted too. so not using them would waste them big time
Nintendo1964 0 points 3h ago
*"Awards and coins are stupid and useless..."* - reddit

*"Don't take away our coins and awards!*" - also reddit

"Oh man we are so pissed! We're aren't gonna take it anymore! Hurry, lets.. Uhhh... Oh look a new post, let's keep scrolling!" - Furious Users of Reddit
werdmouf 1 points 2h ago
I’m furious?
BrothaBear35 1 points 2h ago
No one is "furious" or even cares.
SekhWork 1 points 1h ago
Are we though... ?
4paul 1 points 1h ago
GOOD!!! The worst is when someone gets gold then they edit their message thanking everyone acting all surprised
Engylizium 1 points 1h ago
Last Golden hour of Reddit is coming to the end
nuclearfission 1 points 1h ago
Its because of all the awards people were using on the $1

It clearly shows how worthless the coins were. As people who got gold 5+ years ago have infinite coins and nothing to use them on. So they used them as protest with stickers (that likely boosted reach/engagement)
NineteenAD9 1 points 1h ago
Reddit doing an Elon Twitter Speedrun
gentlegreengiant 1 points 1h ago
I dont see what all the fuss is about.
PrometheusHasFallen 1 points 1h ago
Why won't you take my money Reddit!
Frogweiser 1 points 1h ago
Really.... furious?
Rustlin_Jimmie 1 points 1h ago
Why do I feel like this is going to mean more ads
Smoothstiltskin 1 points 1h ago
I stopped buying gold in 2016 when Spez said he wanted the alt right to have a home on reddit.
figgityfuck 1 points 1h ago
I am?
Libertechian 1 points 1h ago
Apparently I have 27K coins I haven't used, any suggestions?
greentoiletpaper 1 points 1h ago
kind strangers distraught everywhere
Crack_uv_N0on 1 points 1h ago
Let me guess. The replacement will cost mote.
mmatt0904 1 points 52m ago
“Thanks for the gold“ won’t hit as much anymore :/
the_crumb_dumpster 1 points 51m ago
No more showers of gold for good posts?

I guess I’m *pissed*
Eudemon369 1 points 47m ago
the bit that annoys me is I spent money bought coins in bulk and haven't used them all, I got a message telling me they just gonna remove it, with no compensation
brentsg 1 points 39m ago
I paid for the Premium because I despise ads. I would never pay for gold, but I do enjoy giving someone an ad-free week for a great comment. I’m not furious but it made me remember that I’m actively giving Reddit money, so I canceled. I’ll try to find a Reddit replacement.
Scodo 1 points 34m ago
The only ones upset about this, just like the ones upset about the API changes, are the ones with no life outside of Reddit.
demoran 1 points 28m ago
And here I am, sitting with 600 gold I've never used. I'll end up just giving it away. Probably here on this thread.
Size32large 1 points 28m ago
Oh no! So anyway…
